    Hi

    I want to get some clincher wheels built and want to buy the parts over the next few months ready for summer. The thing is I dont have a clue what parts are good or not.

    I want a wheel set that will weigh around 1600grams and my budget is £300ish.

    If anyone can give me any ideas on rims, hubs and spokes I would appreciate that.

    Try Superstar Components.
    Try Superstar Components. They’ve now bridged the gap from MTB into road and you can get their Elite 30 Wheelset 20/24 for only £175.

    Handbuilt by them with “Lifetime free truing” on a return to base basis and they even do a crash replacement discount. The wheelset comes in at “Just 660g front and 850g rear – 1510g for the pair”.

    Or… They will sell you the components if you want to do the build yourself and the product pages even supply the DT Swiss Calc data you need to calculate spoke lengths etc. If you do it yourself you don’t get lifetime free truing of course!

    I have used them for MTB parts in the past and never had any issues with quality or service/delivery etc.

    I’ve been pricing up a pair of handbuilts recently and had a look at Strada and was pretty astonished at the pricing. £330 for archetype rims on 105 hubs? Thats 110 (rims) + 70 (hubs) + 30 (spokes) = £210 so that’s £120 for labour, rim tape, stickers and ingredient X. Most builders charge around £30 +- per wheel by comparison.

    I got excellence on ultegra
    I got excellence on ultegra from Planet X just before Xmas, described as hand built, and I assume hand built for stock rather then to order.

    Really noticed the difference in the ride, although they are c 1900gr the pair according to the blurb

    +1 for Jimmy’s suggestion, I’ve got excellight on record hubs, and excellence on Zenith hubs, both have been fantastics.

    32 hole, 3x cross DT super comp spokes rear (if you are a heavier rider, maybe beef up to DT Competition spokes for the drive side)
    28 hole DT revolution spokes, 2x lacing.

    That should just about have you under the 1,600 gram mark and around a £300 cost. Well, depending on who builds the wheels, and how good your purchasing skills.

    I believe the Zenith hubs are essentially Novatec hubs with a different badge.

    Having recently bought some
    Having recently bought some handbuilt H Plus Son Archetype rims on Novatec hubs with CX Ray spokes around your price range, I could certainly recommend Spokesman Wheels; top set of wheels punching well above its weight for the price.

    (Noteably they’re a builder of the Stans NoTube ztr alpha 340’s which I have with a powertap built in which are the wheels of champions… hands down 😛 )

    This won’t be far off your price point and Hope hubs are very good, they are easy to service and parts readily available. Just ordered the same build but I done mine through my LBS who are doing it all in for £325.

    Are you looking to build them
    Are you looking to build them yourself or just buy the parts and get someone to build them for you?

    If its the second option, give me a shout, opening up a workshop very soon and I’ll do you a great deal.

    Otherwise, look around all the big retailers and see what they have in the clearance/January sales. Some great bargains to be had. I could list heaps, but it seems pointless.

    Mavic Pro Rims, DT spokes and
    Mavic Pro Rims, DT spokes and Shimano 105 hubs, but I think you’ll be lucky to get 1600gm for £300
