Anyone got a Castelli Sanremo Thermosuit?

    I have spotted some reductions on the Castelli Sanremo Thermosuit lately and am tempted to get one. I currently have an Assos Commander suit (off of ebay) which is really useful in the winter, but have worn it a few years and the rear is wearing a bit thin now. The Assos is the thickest pair of bottoms I have and when it is freezing or below I wear it under a full winter jacket. When it is 5/6C it can easily be worn on its own with a light jersey or thermal underneath. The problem is mostly British winter mornings are 0-4C around here. The chill and/or rain still gets through the top of the suit with little room to squeeze in extra layers underneath. I have taken to wearing a wind jacket over the top which blocks the chill.

    So I was wondering about the Sanremo, whether the top is a similar weight to the bottoms which might make it a bit chilly. It could be a cheap way of getting a good Castelli combo and I like the full suit for the winter, but wonder if I will have to wear something over the top again? I am hoping that the top is warm and waterproof enough to wear on its own as intended. And more flexible than Assos gear.

    Has anyone got one could say how you found it in different temperatures, wind and rain?

    I think castelli sizing is really consistent esp compared to many others, so if the Sanremo didn’t fit in XXL then the thermosuit will be exactly the same. I’m 40 inch chest and fairly broad shouldered and XL is fine, so I wouldn’t go any higher than that if I was you. The thermosuit matrial is certainly not baggy, and it’s meant to be fitted anyway!

    Wiggle it and send it back if it’s not right!

    I wear W36/L32 jeans, but only 40 chest, a bit like an uncooked sausage, or a weasel. I bought an summer Sanremo suit last summer in XXL and the top still grips but it isn’t super tight. My concern is the thermosuit material will be a bit baggier and the XXL might be a bit long limbed…

    Oh I should just buy the XL and loose some weight!

    Thanks for the replies, though I wouldn’t get any for a bit there. But “Awesome” and “Best piece of kit I’ve ever ridden in,” are great to hear. Perhaps it is the price that is putting people off. I have pulled my finger out and found the reviews on Wiggle which are equally glowing.

    My main concern now if getting the right size (6ft, 32 inside leg, 90kg = long body)

    You know I probably shouldn’t worry about cold temperatures as I have often found I am too hot this winter, It is 6-10C in Manchester even at 8:30am on the way to work. It has been such a mild winter so far I am often over dressed in tights and jacket. I am wearing them if only because it is dark and wet. I should be in Autumn kit, shorts, warmers, gillet.

    But this isn’t the right forum to seek out global warming deniers for an argument.

    Best piece of kit I’ve ever ridden in.

    I think the main benfit is that you are the same temperature as wearing loads of layers (eg. Base layer, LS jersey and softshell) but it doesn’t flap. Incredible.

    The top isn’t waterproof. Sorry but it just isn’t.

    With a base layer underneath though, it’s all you need. I’ve been wearing it 5 days a week since the end of September and it really is incredible.

    When it rains I just wear a dhb EQ2.5 over the top and that’s full on winter kit. No excuses, you can ride in anything. (ofc with decent overshoes/gloves).

    Probalby worth wearing a buff with it as well, the collar isn’t high enough to protect your larynx if you have a sore throat or something.

    The only thing I’d say is that it does tend to bunch up under the arms, but only when off the bike.

    Got one just before xmas, not been that cold yet but heres what I think

    The top is gore windstopper in the body, the arms are backed with thicker fleecy type material

    The tights are the same as the castelli sopraso (?) With thicker material around the knees and thighs.

    As far as performance goes a good quality long sleeve base layer will do you fine to temperatures down to 5, any lower than that and you might want to think about an extra layer like a gillet. When it starts to get proper cold – temps I’ll put some knee warmers on underneath and perhaps a long sleeved jersey as well.

    The san remo is awsome, build quality is typical castelli, very good, fit is about average for castelli.

    Overall it is a very versatile bit of kit that can be used in quite a large temperature range with the right layers used with it. Get one you will not be disappointed.
