At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The MAAP Training Jersey is a versatile top that wicks and breathes well, whether worn alone or under layers. It's perfect for cooler summer rides and on into autumn and spring. The fit is great too – so long as MAAP's traditionally short bodies suit you.

I have tested several MAAP jerseys over the last few years, and this one has the hallmarks I've come to expect: it looks cool, it wicks and breathes very well, and for some reason it's about an inch shorter than any other jersey on the market.

This jersey is definitely a bit of a do-all, a daily wearer that works alone, under or even over other stuff.

I began reviewing this in the extreme heat towards the end of the summer, which was actually unpleasant – 30°C or more is not really its natural habitat. However, as the weather became more normal (15-25 degrees) it became great by itself, and in such conditions it wicks and breathes well. When temperatures dropped I could stick arm warmers below it, beef up the thermal underlayer and keep going.

The fit is almost aero, but not as aggressive in terms of the cut. It has fairly long arms and a close cut, but traditional seam placement and a lot of stretch – so there's no feeling of restriction. As mentioned though, it does come up shorter than most, so watch out if you have a longer torso.

I like the material a lot – its stretch doesn't leave it feeling thin or flimsy. It sits comfortably against the body, and as it's recycled it can sit more comfortably in the mind, too – you can get over any consumer guilt when you buy it.

Okay, it's personal, but I like the styling. The simple front is matched to some equally clean but attractive designs on the back, where there's a large reflective logo and a bold orange highlight.

You also get three regular pockets and a zipped compartment on the outside of the righthand one. I found them secure and well sized.

Below this there is also a very effective silicone gripper running around the entire waist.

Value

The asking price of £130 puts it up there with offerings from other designer brands. For instance, the Castelli Essenza jersey I reviewed is £140 and offers broadly comparable qualities, although the cut is a little more relaxed.

Alternatively the Gore Distance Jersey Men's is £119.99 and similar in terms of material and qualities, though our reviewer Stu was a little disappointed that it isn't available in brighter colours.

Overall

I was impressed with this jersey. It's no-nonsense in its function, but very good looking in its form. Breathability is good, wicking is excellent, and it works with layers or by itself. It comes up shorter than others, but it's a MAAP and that's now par for the course – if both that and the premium price work for you, this will serve you well.

Verdict

Versatile, effective and very stylish jersey that works for all but the hottest or coldest conditions

This is a very good training jersey that can easily be used year round. It also looks good and is made from recycled materials, which goes some way to assuaging my millennial consumer guilt.

I'm a fan of their shorts, but this came to my belly button. Even at the sale price I sent it back.
