At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

DannyShane consider themselves an eco-conscious company. The Genova II Grey Jersey reflects that with a mix of 50% recycled polyester and 50% a bamboo derived fabric. It's not all about hugging the trees though, this jersey performs brilliantly in pretty much every property you care to judge it on.

Bamboo White Ash is woven directly into the polyester to create a material that is, DannyShane says "naturally wicking, odour resistant, anti-static, durable and with a softness that can't be matched." Bold claims but after plenty of wear and tear they can certainly stand up to scrutiny.

It feels light as you put it on and the comfort of that material against your skin is unbelievable. It's really, really soft making it an absolute pleasure to wear for long or short days in the saddle. It's tough wearing too with a minor off not even fluffing up the fabric where it slid across the tarmac. That's a good thing in a jersey that costs just shy of one hundred quid.

DannyShane say the fit is a 'Performance Cut' and its one that you'll like if you want something fitted without being ultra-clingy. It touches in all of the right places to give a decent shape and an aerodynamic advantage while flattering those of us without Italian climber's physiques. Sizing is pretty standard, so don't need to go up a size as you do with, say, Castelli.

The tail is dropped with the silicone gripper keeping everything in place even when the three pockets are fully loaded. You don't get any sag in the material if those pockets are carrying something heavy.

Perfect for when the summer arrives, the Genova II comes equipped with a full length zip which is hidden by the fabric for a clean look. It all runs smoothly without snagging any fabric. The bamboo ash and polyester mix is breathable too; it doesn't seem to hold on to too much heat and dries quickly should it ever get overwhelmed.

Colour wise it divides opinion, being a rather sombre grey/black and white but I like the simplicity of it and think it's actually quite striking. It should stay looking that way too as DannyShane claim that using this material mix means their jerseys won't fade or discolour. It's been through the wash a few times but obviously it's too early to tell so we'll just take their word for it.

Bamboo has some antibacterial qualities which it manages to hold on to in this processed state. Like Merino you can wear this jersey for much longer than a man-made fabric one before things start getting a bit whiffy. I managed a ten hour week of commutes between washes in fact.

Overall the Genova II Grey jersey is one of the most comfortable jerseys I've ever worn and it feels like quality the moment you hold it in your hands. The cut, quality and finish is all top notch and easily justifies its £96.00 price tag in relation to its competition.

I love it and if it stays looking as good as new I think it's a worthwhile investment in the long run.

Verdict

Top quality, perfect for summer use thanks to non-stinky and breathable fabric; good value too

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

It's a brilliant jersey that is so comfortable to wear, breathable and a great fit.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

The feel of the fabric, very soft.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

Colour may be a little drab for some and it probably won't stand out too well on a misty morn.

Did you enjoy using the product? Yes.

Would you consider buying the product? Yes.

Would you recommend the product to a friend? Yes.

Anything further to say about the product in conclusion?

This jersey is seriously top notch in terms of fit, feel and overall finish. The addition of the Bamboo White Ash really makes a difference to the polyester jersey and it's worth the extra investment, not that I consider the price excessive for what you getting in return.

Since writing his first bike review for road.cc back in early 2009 senior product reviewer Stu has tested more than a thousand pieces of kit, and hundreds of bikes.

With an HND in mechanical engineering and previous roles as a CNC programmer/machinist, draughtsman and development engineer (working in new product design) Stu understands what it takes to bring a product to market. A mix of that knowledge combined with his love of road and gravel cycling puts him in the ideal position to put the latest kit through its paces.

He first made the switch to road cycling in 1999, primarily for fitness, but it didn’t take long for his competitive side to take over which led to around ten years as a time triallist and some pretty decent results. These days though riding is more about escapism, keeping the weight off and just enjoying the fact that he gets to ride the latest technology as part of his day job.

Drab colours. Drab design. £96 "good value". The reviewer clearly earns way too big a salary...

Since when was £96 for a summer jersey 'good value'?

I like minimalist style but that's just a bit too, well, dull.

And yes if it's a race jersey the fit seems rather loose.
