I figured the purist comp deserved a separate thread so we can keep purist discussions separate from the main stage threads.

My Purist team is climber biased:

Wiggins
Nibali
Scarponi
Santambrogio
Betancur
Majka
Pantano
Locatelli
Gavazzi

Gavazzi is my only 'sprinter' but I've effectively got 5 team leaders and Betancur who I think will be stronger than Pozzovivo, at least to start with.

Majka and Betancur are in there for young rider points as is Locatelli although he and Pantano are my breakaway guys.  Gavazzi, I hope, can feature in a few flat stages but I shied away from Bouhanni or Cav as just don't see their being enough stages for them to make them worth picking over the likes of Santambrogio or Scarponi.

Great minds think alike on Gavazzi.....let's hope he can stay between the...ahem....'white lines'?

Surprised no Samu though Dr?

I guess a Cav blue jersey in Brescia would kill us both though!!

Wiggins(must have)
Nibali(ditto)
Weening(great form)
Garzelli(a last swansong)
Gavazzi(likely to be there at the end-hometown=Brescia)
Sanchez(bargain of the Giro for me)
Betancur(youth)
Aru(youth)
Ludviggson(breaks + decent TT)

I 100% don't see Cav winning the points jersey. For Cav to win the jersey he needs to win every point he can on flat stages and at intermediate sprints and he needs for the climbers to all be taking points from each other in the hills, I don't see both happening.

Also, even 5 stage wins wouldn't probably score as many fantasy points as Nibali who's priced about the same.

I considered both Weening and Sanchez, Weening in particular as his team has no real mountain leader so he should be free to do as he pleases, but both I'm not sure if he can sustain his form from a month or so ago, he was already starting to fall off in the Ardennes. Sanchez though was a tough one, he's been in poor form and his stated ambitions are very low (just wants a stage win) so I'm not sure he sees himself as an actual contender but he's cheap for a guy who could realistically podium.

I went for all Italians as I am rubbish at this sort of thing:
Nibali
Scarponi
Modolo
Santambrogio
Aru
Pirazzi
Rosa
Viviani
Marangoni

The other thing with Sanchez is that IF he gets his much desired stage win it's quite likely he'll crest a few KOM's on the way and he could easily have a blockbuster 'Voeckler' type stage.

Either way he'll either be in contention on GC picking up regular points or if he falls behind he could easily pull off a 'spetacollo'.....for cheaper than Nizzolo or Kiserlovski(did-dig arsene 3 )

Didn't pick Wiggins for mine, kept in Cav.

Michele Scarponi
Thomas Dekker
Alex Dowsett
Mauro Santambrogio
Mark Cavendish
Stefano Garzelli
Pieter Weening
Vicenzo Nibali
Stefano Pirazzi

I did stick with Cav in the end - I'm hoping there might be a couple more sprint finishes than people seem to think. My main concern with stacking it with climbers was that their main chances to score don't come until later on. Still...
The first 5 names on the sheet were...
Wiggins
Nibali
Locatelli
Santambrogio
Gavazzi
The rest changed several times, before I stuck with...
Cavendish
Bole
Pellizotti (really no idea, but thought it might be worth a gamble)
Jeannesson (I like him. If he's not in good enough condition to ride with the big boys, he's as likely as anyone to get in those breakaways...)

Didn't want to be too risky, as I'm 5th overall in purist at the mo. Still a couple of wildcards tho!

Yeah, stacking climbers basically means you're hoping all your riders get to the last week without any incidents and in some form whereas the sprinters can get you points on the board nice and early.

I'm liking the fact that not many people seem to be picking Scarponi, he's my outside tip for a podium and I think he's in better form than most people realise, hoping for a couple of stage wins as he tries to claw back the bags of time he loses on the ITT.

Ya but they both know the Giro much better than Sanchez. Also Nizzolo can contest all sprint stages and I rate Kiserlovski higher than Sanchez regarding the overall. Plus Radio Shack got a fine ttt line-up. 4
One rider i'd really like to have is Felline tho. Hes good on hillier stages.

I have a similar team to you drh.

Wiggins
Nibali
Scarponi
Betancur
Santambrogio
Pirazzi
Di Luca
Gavazzi
Dekker

Hoping Pirazzi has a go for the KOM jersey.

I agree drh - Scarponi could well be a good shout. I think Gesink could also go well (with Mollema likely to lead Blanco in the TdF), but he's been rubbish every time I've picked him in the past so I decided to leave him out, and put a fiver on him to finish on the podium instead!

Betancur and Sammy S are the two that I could really do with having a bad time of it - expecting them to feature in a lot of teams.

Regardless of the game though, just really excited to have a grand tour back on, and for it to be getting so much coverage.

Yeah, very excited to have 'proper' racing back again 4

I've said elsewhere that the Giro is my favourite race and I'm really hoping to do well, I'm glad my team is very similar to Wig_Billy's, that means I'm likely to do well but I missed Pirazzi and that's actually a really good shout. When I looked at the race I considered GC and young rider but didn't really think overly much about KoM because it generally ends up going to a random pick but I think Pirazzi may go hard for it this year.

I hope he crashes today...

My team for purist

Mark Cavendish (OPQ)
Elia Viviani (LIQ)
Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ)
Taylor Phinney (BMC)
Samuel Sanchez (EUS)
Matti Breschel (SAX)
Oscar Gatto (VIN)
Mattia Gavazzi (AND)
Luka Mezgec (ARG)

to be honest this is an unashamed attempt to win stage podiums and high roller badges as I have no interest in the prize and it was me who suggested the numbers on the badges to begin with.

My real purist team to win would be:

Wiggins
Hesjedal
Nibali
Santambroglio
Betancur
Locatelli
Pellizotti
Battaglin
Mezgec

might score it myself if I can be bothered.

Looking at the teams, I'm more and more happy that no-one is looking like this

Bradley Wiggins (DUH)
Ryder Hesjedal (No-one else is picking him, he should score well)
Vicenzo Nibali (Double Duh)
Michele Scarponi (Has been in good form, should score well)
Jorge Azanza (Always have a Euski)
Julien Berard (Don't know what I was thinking)
Thomas Dekker (Decent wee climber and can TT)
Vladimir Karpets (Climbs and has cool hair)
Stefano Locatelli (Sprints? Breaks? Climbs? TT? Abandons?)

Well, my pretend purist team has the same big three. Be interesting to see how our other picks go.

Bradley Wiggins
Michele Scarponi
Robert Gesink
Matteo Rabottini
Rigoberto Uran
Mattia Gavazzi
Luka Mezgec
Julien Berard
Stefano Garzelli

I think Gesink who has been fairly quiet recently could do quite well.

As discussed elsewhere, I went (as far as I could) for an all-Colombian purist. They are:

Henao
Uran
Rubiano
Sarmiento
Duque
Betancur
Pantano
Serpa
Rodriguez (token Venezuelan)

I generally fail spectacularly at Purist, so thought I'd have a bit of fun with it.

Big fat zero for the boys from the Andes. My 'proper' purist team (listed on another thread) would actually have scored a fair few points today.

63 for Cav - I reckon another 200 and I'll be happy he was worth the risk, so a long way to go.

Was also hoping for something from Gavazzi and Bole - saw both of them near the front in the last 5km so they must've got caught up in the crash - swings & roundabouts as usual...

Won't be getting much today purist-wise, 20 would be a good result!

hoping my purist team will start climbing up the table after Thursday

Bradley Wiggins (SKY)
Samuel Sanchez (EUS)
Vicenzo Nibali (AST)
Mauro Santambrogio (VIN)
Fabio Aru (AST)
Rafal Majka (SAX)
Carlos Alberto Betancur (ALM)
Stefano Locatelli (BVI)
Stefano Garzelli (VIN)

Think my big 4 could well end up in the top 6 overall.
Aru, Majka and Betancur should take the top 3 youth and do well on stages
And I'm hoping my Stefano's can challenge for the mountain points later on
Didn't think Cav was worthwhile.

I have six of those nine:

Bradley Wiggins (SKY)
Ryder Hesjedal (GRM)
Vicenzo Nibali (AST)
Mauro Santambrogio (VIN)
Fabio Aru (AST)
Luca Mezgec (ARG)
Carlos Alberto Betancur (ALM)
Mattia Cattaneo (LAM)
Stefano Garzelli (VIN)

not enough sprint stages to waste time with sprinters on a purist team, i don't reckon. got a big fat zero on stage one but on the up now...

Back from training high up on Exmoor. First day I have seen any racing, sounds like I missed some fun yesterday.

I have these same 6 guys as the "doc"

Nibs
Wiggo
Betancur
Santambroglio
Locatelli
Gavazzi

Went for Niemiec over Scalponi hoping it's too much for the old boy and they give teh younger man his head, but that is obviously not happening, Booooo!

Kelderman for the youth and TTing.

and my ace in the hole Battanglin.

Happy man this evening as had him in both teams.

Me too! Zero was a bit upsetting even though I was half expecting it.
