I’m looking for a cheapish road bike to use on an Elite Direto direct drive trainer. Will a bike with Claris (or Sora) work alright with the 105 cassette I’ve got on the trainer? I know the trainer is only compatible with 9/10/11 speed Shimano but if the cassette is ok will the rest be ok??

Thanks for this, pretty much what I suspected. I’ve read that an 8 speed cassette with a spacer works ok so might need to give that a shot.

Assuming you are talking

Assuming you are talking about the most recent groupsets…

Shimano Claris is 8 speed, Sora is 9 speed and 105 is 11 speed.

None of these is compatible with another, you can’t mix and match speeds because of the different pull ratios.

 

Your only option is to use an 8 speed cassette on the trainer, with a spacer – this should work – can anyone confirm this though?
