Continental are offering a pair of their brand new Grand Sport Race tyres in return for a pair of old tyres (any non Continental brand) with a pair of inner tubes worth £71.88. The promotion runs until 31st July at selected dealers and some sportives, and they’re only asking you to complete a feedback form on the new tyres in return for their generosity.
To partake in the offer you need to take your bike to a participating dealer where they will remove your old tyres and fit a pair of brand new Grand Sport Race in 23 or 25mm width with new Race28 inner tubes. They’ll dispose of the old tyres on your behalf.
This offer runs from 15th May to 31st July, but Continental says that dealers have a limited supply, and once a dealer exhausts their supply prior to 1st June, the offer is no longer available. So the hint is to not hang around if you want to make use of this offer, and get down to your nearest dealer sharpish. With a new pair of tyres fitted, customers will be asked to give their feedback of the new tyres at their website. Doesn't seem too much to ask in return for a brand new pair of tyres.
The Grand Sport is a brand new tyre from Continental available in three variations; Light, Extra and Race. The latter is a racing and training tyre featuring a 180tpi casing with a NyTech breaker to protect against flats, and the new PureGrip compound is said to provide high levels of grip.
There are also three events that you’ll be able to do a tyre swap, where they’ll have about 100 tyres so again you don’t want to be back of the queue. The events are the Welsh Wild West Sportive (25th May), Dragon Ride (8th June) and the Dartmoor Classic Sportive (22nd June).
You can see the full list of participating dealers at their website http://www.tyre-amnesty.co.uk/index.php/offer-details

I’ll swap a couple on to some rims and take them to the LBS which happens to be in the scheme..

I’m confused – are these tyres supposed to be more sporty than the GP4000s, or less so? Is the winter/training tyre more durable than GP4S? I love Conti but their range is almost too big…

This sounds like a great offer, unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be anywhere in Essex listed as a participant, bit of a long drive to the nearest one, kind of knocks the point of them being free if it’s going to cost a lot to get there.
Oh well, hopefully this will encourage others to do similar offers with new tyres etc, I’ve got a couple of old spares ready just in case.

My LBS are charging £14 to fit them, which I don’t mind paying when Conti are taking the ‘hit’ on the tyres and tubes.
Having arranged everything with them, I am dropping off the wheels, free of tyres and tubes, but will, of course be providing them with some ‘old’ (very very old) 700c tyres
I emailed Conti who replied saying that it was down to the specific dealer to charge if they wanted.

Yeah chaps, we’re all saying the same thing. But if the shop has found itself on the wrong end of the deal, I’d buy something as the polite way of supporting them. Never really run into the cliquey behaviour, but I’ve always done most of my own maintenance, and the shop I use for the rest is a good old traditional place that’s been around since before I learned to ride.
The shop can declined to
The shop can declined to participate, they can’t inadvertantly be obliged to install tyres.
I suspect its a poorly put together promotion by the tea boy at continental towers or more likely some marketing company is doing for them, either way they should be clear whats in the promotion.
The tyres btw are a bit naff and not continentals usual very high standard.
IanW1968 wrote:The shop can
Didn’t suggest they would be, but if you’ve ever worked in retail you’ll know that you’re the one who has to maintain the customer relationship, not the wholesaler or distributer.
I don’t know the bike trade, but when promotions happen in the sector I do know it’s the major retailers that have agreed the terms with the distributor and the independents that then find they have to match them or wonder if they’ll lose a repeat customer.
Trying to pressure someone else in the supply chain to carry some cost for your promotion is a trick as old as retail.

Had some fitted today for £15 which “do ices” the deal a fair amount. I would be okay if you had the option to do it yourself or pay for installation.
Anyway, after a fairly short 30 minute ride back the tires seem pretty decent. Noticeable difference to Duranos I usually have, (did not use them for the amnesty though) offering a more damped feel. Thumb grip check feels quite grippy. Hope they hold up well!

I saw the feature on Wednesday and rang my LBS (Julie’s Cycles in Leicester) and booked in for today for a pair of 25’s.
Swapped my winter tyres (Shwalbe Durano’s) off the bike and stuck some (really old) Lugano’s on that have been in the shed for two years.
£15 fitting fee later and I have brand spanking new tyres and tubes.
And I also got handed back the (Conti Race 28) tubes I had on previously too.
I’ve had GP4000s’ before and these don’t seem too different.
Tacky rubber and well made.
Guy in the shop said these are a brand new compound and different to the previous Grandsport tyres.
Now… Did someone mention the words ‘gifthorse’ and ‘mouth’…? 😕
