The market for alternative Garmin computer mounts has exploded in the past couple of years, and the RaceWare Garmin Edge Stem Mount is the perfect solution for very short stems or those lacking free handlebar space for a regular mount.
The RaceWare Garmin Edge Stem Mount fits between the top of the stem and stem top cap, replacing a spacer, and 'floats' the Garmin over your stem. The mount measures 10mm thick and has 3mm of vertical offset, ensuring the Garmin computer clears the top cap. Like all RaceWare products, it's available in 11 colours so you can colour match with your bike and kit, if you're that way inclined.
It's made from nylon using a 3D printing process and is compatible with any Garmin Edge computer, including 200, 500, 510, 800 and 810. I used it with an Edge 500, but it works really well if you want to mount the larger 800/810 computer over the stem, but your stem is too short to use the stock Garmin mount.
It's easy to fit, and it's easy to use. It works like any other Garmin mount. With the Garmin fitted, it's very secure and stable.
I don't really like having my Garmin sitting out in front of my handlebars as seems to be the fashion at the moment, I much prefer it over the stem. The stem mount solves the same problem that the out-front mounts do, in freeing up handlebar space or accommodating bikes without the necessary fitting space on the stem, but places the Garmin in a better position.
It's an ideal solution if you don't have any free space on your handlebar to fit a conventional Garmin mount, or your stem is too short to fit a mount. Even if you have a longer stem, it's a nice alternative to fitting the mount around your stem.

The Raceware Garmin Stem mount is designed to hold the GPS unit centrally above the handlebar stem. The mount replaces a 10mm spacer and then is held in place with the top cap. Please note that the original top cap and spacers should be used to torque the headset prior to the mount being fitted. They are made from 3D printed nylon and available in a wide range of colours.

does it come with a bit of extra steerer for people who’ve already cut theirs to the correct length?
Alternatively, shim under the near edge of your free Garmin mount with some rubber bands to give you the offest required to clear the top cap.

No, it replaces the spacer you have above your stem, that you put there when you cut the steerer to make sure the steerer protruded the stem (you know like most stems and fork makers suggest you do these days, especially on carbon steerers). 😉
Anyway, I have one. Its good but they are expensive, which is why I got mine from ebay for much much less.

I had one of these – it sat
I had one of these – it sat nicely on top of the 50mm stem on my mountain bike.
Unfortunately, it is sufficiently brittle that a crash snapped it to bits. As it was pretty new and TWENTY QUID I haven’t replaced it.

I use my Garmin on my mountain bike as well and just seat it on the junction of the handlebar and stem using the long O-rings. Nice and secure and doesn’t matter about the short stem

It’s not a fashion, it’s a functional improvement.
Out-front mounts aren’t for freeing up handlebar space (when the standard Garmin mount is on the stem, how does that work anyway?); they put the display in much better position for viewing than when mounted on the stem, particularly on a road/race bike.

So the next logical step would be a mount that replaces your top cap once the stem is tightened. (Edit; Already done.)

The reason the out-in-front works well is that it is better positioned for observing the road and the device, this seems to be the opposite.
