The Roubaix fabric of these comfortable gloves gives you enough feel to tinker with a troublesome mech by the roadside while providing you with excellent protection from sharp spring and autumn chills.
These are perfect for those rides when it’s too chilly for mitts yet too warm for full-on winter gloves. The outers have a Lycra-like texture and short but very effective cuffs that keep the draughts off your wrists. Scotchlite logos on the backs ensure your hand signals are clearly visible to other traffic without cluttering up the design.
Flipping them over reveals silicone beads on the palm and forefingers to improve grip and control whether you’re riding on the tops, hoods or drops. Warmer temperatures see the fabric manage moisture fairly efficiently – at least, my hands never felt clammy even on long rides, although saturation took 20 minutes in sharp showers.
Introducing mud to the mix had little impression, so we’d say these gloves are up to milder cross and mountain bike duties too, and you can sling them in the cool wash without any trouble.
However, the absence of padding around the ulnar nerve region left my hands tingling after a few hours of riding – especially if I’d indulged in some rough stuff riding along the way. And the other annoying trait was the fabric’s tendency to attach itself limpet-like to Velcro. This proved comical when strapping a lighting battery to a top tube, but downright infuriating when trying to fish multi tools, change, and so on from rack bags or some pockets.
Verdict
Very good early season’s gloves, although some padding would have improved the performance.
