With a range of the latest summer cycling gear in for review, this week’s Five Cool Things focuses on cycling clothing and helmets. Highlights include Fizik’s new helmet featuring a ‘rear spoiler’, Castelli’s white bib shorts designed to reduce drag, Santini’s packable waterproof vest, and affordable jerseys and jackets from Boardman and Sportful. Check out the previews here, with full reviews coming soon…
Fizik Kudo Aero helmet (£269.99)

Italian brand Fizik, best known for its saddles and shoes, released a range of four helmets earlier this month, including the Kudo Aero helmet which is “a high-performance, half-shell cycling helmet”, so we’re told.
It features an integrated light, MIPS Air Node system and ‘rear spoiler’, which claims to increase aerodynamic efficiency.
Our size M (56-59cm) came in at 291g on the road.cc Scales of Truth, and Matt Page will be putting this one to the test. Check back in a couple of weeks to see whether the spoiler really does make him any faster.
Castelli Free Aero Race S Bibshort (£199)

Next up are a pair of dazzling white shorts. These Castelli Free Aero Race S Bibshorts are said to offer lower drag than anything previously in the range, featuring a series of textured heat stamp stripes on the outside of each leg, which Castelli says delivers a 3% decrease in CdA compared with the previous design (at 40km/h).
If this white version doesn’t do it for you, the Aero Race S also comes in Black, Mocha (brown) and Belgian Blue, and there’s a Soudal Quick-Step version too.
Santini Magic Packable Waterproof Vest Unisex (£120)

Designed to tackle extreme rain, Santini’s Magic Packable Waterproof Vest packs down into its own rear pocket so you can stash it away until the heavens open.
The vest is made from Polartec® Power Shield™ RPM fabric, providing a combination of waterproofing and breathability. Both the outer layer and internal membrane use recycled polyester, and it also features a PFAS-free DWR treatment.
It’s available in eights sizes from XXS to 3XL and four colours. Ben Woodhouse is testing this one so check back soon to see how it performs.
Boardman Mens Waterproof Jacket (£45)

The Boardman Men’s Waterproof Jacket is a versatile option that works both on and off the bike, with large reflective panels to boost visibility in low-light conditions.
Constructed from waterproof and windproof fabric, it comes equipped with two front zipped pockets and a rear zipped pocket for storage, along with a removable hood.
At £45, stay tuned to see how Josh finds this jacket during his weekday commute.
Sportful Classic Jersey (£60)

Sportful’s Classic Jersey is clean-looking jersey, designed for riding in temperatures of between 15 and 35°C.
It features a regular fit and is made from breathable fabric that Sportful says offers excellent sweat management. Added UV protection helps shield you from the sun on longer rides, while three rear pockets provides storage for the essentials.
At £60, the Classic Jersey looks to be a good value choice for summer cycling.

The Boardman jacket looks
The Boardman jacket looks alright for the price, more winter than bizarre, but not complaining, ridiculously hot spring. And very dry.
