Hunt Proven Race XC UD Carbon Spoke wheelset – Technical details
The Proven range from Hunt represents the pinnacle of its wheel line-up, as they’re built with top-tier components tailored for the demands of each discipline. For cross-country use, that means low weight, high stiffness, and modern dimensions to match the evolving world of XC racing.
Among the selection, the Race XC UD model sits at the very top. With a claimed weight of just 1,254g, it’s one of the lightest production wheelsets on the market.

The rim is a Proven carbon model with a 30mm internal width, 36mm external, and a shallow 22mm depth. It’s the only shared component with the more affordable Hunt Proven Race XC.
The key difference is in the spokes, as there are 20 up front and 24 at the rear, which are made from unidirectional carbon fibre and shaped with a bladed profile. We’re told these weigh just 2.4g each. For comparison, conventional steel spokes typically weigh six or seven grams, and even premium bladed options like DT Aerolites sit around four to five grams. That difference quickly adds up, saving more than 100g across a wheelset. But weight isn’t the only benefit — Hunt claims the carbon spokes are also stronger, with reduced elongation under load compared to steel.

Both hubs are made from forged and CNC-machined aluminium, with the front using 6061-T6 alloy and straight-pull spoke holes, and the rear made from a higher-grade 6066-T6. The hubs are available with Shimano Microspline, HG, or SRAM XD driver bodies, and use a 90-tooth freehub for a rapid 2° engagement. They also roll on REVO bearings with dual full-contact seals, designed for year-round reliability in British conditions.

Hunt recommends pairing the wheels with 2.2–2.4in tyres, though anything from 1.9 to 2.8in is technically compatible. This covers most modern XC race tyres, including the now-common 2.4in options. The TSS (Tubeless Straight Side) rim design comes with a lower maximum pressure than traditional hooked rims, but the 36psi limit (for 2.2–2.5in tyres) should still fall comfortably within race setups.
While Hunt typically includes spare spokes with its wheels, the UD carbon spokes on this model don’t come with extras — only tubeless valves are supplied. What is included is the H_Care support package, which provides lifetime crash replacement for the original owner and covers the cost of any spoke replacement.
Hunt Proven Race XC UD Carbon Spoke wheelset – Performance
One recurring issue with Hunt wheels has been the quality of the tubeless tape, and unfortunately, the Proven Race XC was no exception. On the test set, the edge of the tape wasn’t fully adhered, which could cause problems with tubeless sealing. Fitting the wheels with tubes initially helped — the pressure appeared to bed the tape in more securely. Another useful trick (relevant to any wheelset with tubeless tape) is to place a glueless tube patch over the tape join, which can help prevent it from lifting during use.

The supplied tubeless valves fit reasonably well. However, due to the rim’s rounded profile and the flat locking nut design, there was a slight amount of movement when tightening the valve down. That said, the wheels remained airtight throughout the test period.
Tyre fitting was very straightforward. Both Kenda and Schwalbe tyres mounted easily, even when using Tubolight Diamana SL tyre inserts. At most, a single tyre lever was needed. Inflation was also hassle-free, with a standard track pump doing the job and no frantic pumping required.
Hunt claims a weight of 1,254g for the wheelset, but the test set came in at exactly 1,300g (565g front / 735g rear) with tubeless tape fitted but without valves. This is a fairly typical variance — the claimed weight likely refers to the lightest configuration with no tape or valves, and this isn’t the first Hunt wheelset we’ve tested that comes in a little over spec.

On the trail, the wheels ride brilliantly. Their low weight and reduced rotational inertia are immediately noticeable when climbing or accelerating. Swapping from the alloy Hunt XC Wide V3 wheelset, which weighs close to 1,700g, the nearly 400g difference is easy to feel.
Acceleration is a real highlight, helped not just by the weight but also by the lateral stiffness. Even when running wide 2.4” tyres at low pressures, the wheels respond immediately to power input. Improvements in comfort are harder to isolate — likely masked by the use of high-TPI tyres — though one curious trait was the carbon spokes occasionally whistling in the wind. It’s harmless, but definitely noticeable in quieter riding conditions.
The 90-tooth freehub delivers rapid, near-instant engagement and a crisp buzz when coasting. It’s not overly loud, but clearly audible. Fast engagement is useful in technical climbs where quick pedal pickups are important, though in my experience, the benefits diminish beyond around 40 teeth — still, dropping back to a slower hub would likely feel less precise by comparison. The ratchet runs smoothly with very little drag, and the bearings have stayed impressively smooth despite plenty of wet and muddy riding.

Over the long term, these wheels have proven impressively durable. They’ve remained true throughout regular use, with no spoke-related issues or signs of premature wear. The carbon spokes are manually fitted and fully replaceable — an important feature considering the wheels’ high-end construction. Hunt also includes its H_Care package, which offers free crash replacement for the original owner. Outside of that, replacement spokes are available at £12 each. While this may initially seem steep, it’s worth noting that carbon spokes EW considerably more expensive. For comparison, a steel Sapim CX-Ray typically costs around £3, and a DT Swiss Aerolite around £4.
Overall, the standout trait is the stiffness, particularly under load. In racing scenarios, this translates into sharp, efficient power transfer. While some wheels, such as the ZIPP 3ZERO MOTO, offer built-in flex to better track technical terrain, I’d argue that for XC racing, low weight and stiffness offer a more tangible performance benefit. Riders focused on climbing, sprinting, and aggressive efforts will appreciate the Proven Race XC UD’s direct, responsive ride feel.
HUNT Proven Race XC UD Carbon Spoke wheelset – Verdict
At £1,600, the Proven Race XC wheelset is undoubtedly a significant investment, but it more than holds its own against the competition. For context, Specialized’s recently launched Roval Control World Cup boasts a sub-1kg claimed weight, but it also carries a hefty £2,500 price tag. The Control SL VI with Solix hubs comes in at a similar 1,275g but still costs £2,150.

At a more affordable price, the SILT XC Carbon wheelset is a genuine rival, with a 1,337g claimed weight and a much lower price of £800. However, its overall design and spec arguably lack some of the refinement and innovation of the Proven Race XC UD. Even within Hunt’s own range, there’s stiff competition: the standard Proven Race XC (with steel spokes and an older rear hub offering 72-point, 5° engagement) retails for £1,200 — though currently available for £800 — and shares the same carbon rim.
Concerns around carbon spokes are understandable, but in practice, they’ve been entirely fuss-free. Over the test period, the wheels have handled everything from rugged Moroccan trails to wet and rocky Welsh trail centres, and even the high-intensity efforts of national-level XC racing, which is exactly the sort of terrain and riding they’re built for. Aside from the underwhelming tubeless tape, which is worth addressing before first use, the wheels have proven fast, smooth, reliable, and impressively responsive, with no mechanical issues to report.
