Endura’s MT500 Waterproof Short II is comfortable, well fitted and most importantly, waterproof. In fact, there’s not a lot to complain about, although I can’t say I’m too thrilled about this ‘nutmeg’ colour – luckily there’s black as well – and it is fairly pricey.

As part of the MT500 range, the Waterproof Short II shares much of the same tech as the purposefully named MT500 Waterproof Jacket II, which scored excellently in last year’s review.

These shorts benefit from Endura’s ExoShell40DR three-layer fabric, with a PVC-free DWR coating that’s said to be extra friendly to the environment. The seat area is also reinforced to increase durability.

They get water-resistant hand pockets, belt loops, and a zip-and-popper closure. They also feature Endura’s Clickfast system, which works with the matching range of padded liners to create an extra secure fit.

On the subject of fit, they’re bang on. I’m a 32” waist and my size medium fits perfectly. It fits so well that I never felt the need to use the Clickfast system, in fact – it’s a bit too fiddly to warrant the extra effort.

The legs are cut long, edging into three-quarter length territory, which adds weather protection, eliminates kneepad gaps and stops spray from creeping up your leg. They’re also pre-shaped for a better fit on the bike.

Despite the extra material of the longer inseam, I never felt my maneuverability being hindered. They never get in the way, and maintain their excellent comfort even in pouring rain.

On the bike, it’s super noticeable how light they are, even when wet. Thanks to the DWR coating the fabric simply shrugs off water, stopping the shorts from ever getting soaked through. Honestly, they’re just as comfortable at their wettest as when they’re bone dry.

They’re seriously breathable too, while the moisture-wicking fabric works seriously well anyway – sweat or excessive heat hasn’t been an issue.

At £100 these sit at the higher end of the price range, yet the Endura MT500 Waterproof Short II is a worthy investment. To put it simply, performance is excellent. They’re comfy, very well made and as protective against the chills of flying water as shorts can seriously be.
