WPL wet chain lube is a non-sticky chain lube that help reduce the build up of black gunk on your gears and is well priced too. We just wish it was a bit more widely available, for now, though you can buy from suspension specialists, TF Tuned.

Whistler Performance Lubricants Wet Chain Lube, to give it its full name is a chain lube made in Canada for wet and ‘moderate’ conditions. I’ve used it throughout the latter part of autumn and winter in all sorts of damp conditions. It’s proved itself to be a good quality lube that ticks all the right boxes where its environmental and biodegradable qualities are concerned.

The lube states its made with all natural ingredients which are 100% biodegradable. It’s non-toxic and PTFE- free (that’s Teflon free) too. The lube also features the brands ‘EmulsifiteTM technology’, that WPL says provides dynamic cleaning and prevents black gloop building up. This tech involves fine tuning the lube ingredients to resist water from puddles and rain but then when the chain is cleaned with a high pressure hose, certain ingredients in the lube are activated in order to disperse muck and grime.

It seems the lube is properly ‘sciency’ but I’m guessing all you want to know is ‘did it last?’ and ‘was there an excess build up of goop on the chain?’. The answer is yes it did and no there wasn’t, in that respective order! The lube, when applied to a clean chain, kept working well throughout my dirty winter rides that have lasted anything between 1-4 hours in all kinds of conditions. There was a noticeable lack of grime build up on the chain too. It has, however, been dead mucky round my way recently  I have found the need to clean my bike properly after every ride, including cleaning the chain and cassette. Although build up is lessened, you’ll probably still need to clean the drivetrain after a really mucky ride, just squirting with the hose didn’t usually have the desire effect.

The lube is simple to apply via the twist open nozzle, it’s just the right viscosity that it drops out of the bottle rather than pours, meaning you can control it well as you apply to the links. It also doesn’t create any stringy, sticky mess between the chain and the chainring as you cycle the chain backwards, bonus. A cursory wipe off of excess lube and you are ready to ride.

At £7.99 the lube is well priced, if you see some in your local bike shop, pick it up, you won’t be disappointed. The lube is available from TF Tuned but we’ve not seen it advertised online elsewhere (other than Amazon), we just wish it was a bit more widely available. TF Tuned say that you can buy directly from them online (£7.99 plus £3 delivery), they also supply to the trade so you could see it in your local bike shop soon.
