    Following Chuck’s thought- and discussion-provoking threads over the last couple of days, I’d like to raise one of my own.

    How many fingers do you have on each hand?

    One of my kids asked me why there are 60 seconds in a minute and not 10 or 100. I showed her how to count to 60 using her hands. My wife was watching and I thought her head was going to explode.

    Speakers of Telefol use parts of their arm, their ears, eyes and nose and thus have a base-27 counting system – which no doubt seems perfectly natural to them.

    We should accept the fact of evolution though – no-one’s lobbying for them to be called “fin rays”*.

    When you were little and asked to ‘use your fingers’ to count, could you only get up to eight before you had to stop?
