Turbo Trainer Indecisiveness

    Hi Folks,

    Typically the Elite Directo is comparable to the Tacx Flux and the Cycleops Hammer is compared to the Neo, Kickr, Drivo but as it happens I have the budget for either Direto or Hammer at the same price for £500 +- change.

    The Hammer is technically considered the higher end but the increase in resistance and gradient simulation is not as high on my priority as sound, accuracy, general feel.

    I do hear good things about the directo which is why I am wavering on the choice.

    I use 4iiii left crank PM on my bike and I know I can use that so that my numbers are comparable both inside and out but I will probably change to a cheap powerless frame on the trainer and maybe use the offset on the 4iiii to try match the turbo power for consistency and you have the option at looking at LR balance on the direto.

    So…what would your choice be noting that the other “high end” turbos are out of budget and I’m not considering the flux?

    +1 for the Turbo Muin, the

    +1 for the Turbo Muin, the feel is up there with the best in terms of realism and you really dont need the erg mode for training. Only thing is that it starts to give slightly higher wattage readings under prolonged hard efforts as it heats up but its pretty much silent and great for suffering on.

    I’ve got an Elite Muin and,

    I’ve got an Elite Muin and, while it’s not got the resistance stuff it’s a great direct drive trainer. Best £300ish I’ve spent on my training in a long time

    Look at a fluid trainer if you’re using a power meter. I know some who find them fine for Zwift, as Zwift uses power to work out speed+plus your weight

    I’ve got the elite Kura, it’s

    I’ve got the elite Kura, it’s very good. Wobbles a bit more to the left as the legs aren’t even, I’m considering extending the legs to make the base wider and more stable. Doesn’t control resistance, but that’s preferred for me. Compact chainset, ultegra 14-28 casette. Can’t remember where I got the cadence sensor, usb bluetooth dongle can be bought cheap though.

    I was pleasantly surprised that it isn’t very loud. You might need to turn the volume up a bit on the TV, but I wouldn’t say it was loud, it’s a less unpleasant sounds than some of the others.

    I think the elite are the most accurate for power.

    My budget is in the 500 range
    My budget is in the 500 range and it’s not about adding a couple extra hundred to it for a Neo (can get new for 760), it’s really all about what I am willing to spend on a turbo (or what the wifey allows!) Which is why I am not considering the others up the price range

    Save a bit more and buy a second hand Neo, they’re going for about £700 on eBay

    Quite happy with my Flux
