Uploading to Strava while on a multi-day trip

Currently I plug my Garmin Edge 500 into my laptop via the USB port to upload to Strava.

But, I’m going to be doing a bit of bikepacking & I don’t want to lug my laptop around with me. So what are my options:

Of course I could just wait until after the trip & upload all my rides at once, but assuming I want to do this while I’m away, does it work in the manner described below:

    • A newer Garmin with bluetooth “talks” to a smartphone and the smartphone uploads to Strava via an app?
    • If the above is correct, would any smartphone be able to handle the upload to Strava, or does it have to be a particular OS?
    • Or is there another option which doesn’t need a smartphone? (I’ve done pretty well avoiding them up until now, but bike-related apps mean that I may have to take the plunge).

    Thanks for advice!

Agreed, it looks amazing, and the best thing about buying it would be knowing that Garmin didn’t make a penny off it!

    Thanks all, thanks Dave,

    Thanks all, thanks Dave,

    • So I would need a new Garmin because my Edge 500 doesn’t connect wirelessly to a smartphone.
    • But if I buy an Edge 820 or 1000, I won’t need the smartphone because these units can upload directly.

Seems rather pointless getting the smartphone then?

I’ve joined my Edge 1000 to

I’ve joined my Edge 1000 to my phone as a wireless hotspot on a few occasions to upload rides when away from home for a length of time.  Worked perfectly for me.

I did this when I was in

I did this when I was in Mallorca for a week using my Garmin Edge 500, Android tablet & a USB OTG cable.

I found this article about it:

    http://www.oliverhiggins.com/how-to-garmin-edge-500-strava-android/

One thing I did find though was the first time I did it my Garmin got corrupted so had to do a factory reset.

    Probably won’t help you but

Probably won’t help you but my 800 has stopped uploading using the USB. I’m now saving rides to the memory card and sticking that in my phone to upload.

a garmin uploads to garmin connect, and you can get connect to auto-sync to strava. so essentially, yes. the same goes for bryton and lezyne GPS computers: sync to the portal, auto-sync from there to strava (i think they can both auto-sync)

any android or iOs phone will do the job. obviously you need a data connection

without a smartphone you’re limited. The garmin 1000 and 820 have a wifi connection so you can upload without a phone if you can find wifi. the Xplova X5 (http://www.xplova.com/x5.php) takes a SIM card so you can upload any time you have a signal. i’ve got one on test at the moment and i really like it; not cheap though.
