Halfords – Boardman Team hybrid issues

    I got a boardman team hybrid in April. I like the bike overall but….
    The bottom bracket started making a grinding noise. Halfords tightened it. Then that one started making a noise and fell off mid ride, caused a minor cut and banged knee but could of been much worse. Halfords changed it again and fitted a new chain set. I was told it was an upgrade. The old set was FSA Gossamer Compact 50/34t. The new one is SRAM Apex power glide. He also changed the peddles from metal cages ones to flat black ones.

    The balance of the bike now seems really off and I can’t help feel he’s put cheap parts on just to bodge the job and hope I don’t notice. Any ideas anyone? I just feel generally unhappy with the bike now and it is not a cheap bike.

    Had my non drive crank shear
    Had my non drive crank shear off completely on the way to work earlier in the year, and started to get a lot of play from the bottom bracket a couple of months ago. Seemed like a good opportunity to whip the lot out and slot some 105 kit in (bottom bracket and crankset). First ride felt like riding with rockets on, and generally working like a dream now. Cost less than a ton to upgrade.

    I suspect that they either under or over torqued the bolt that holds the non-drive side crank on. (Or possibly under first time, over second time.)

    I don’t think the bottom bracket was the problem, the noise was probably the crank moving on the axle.

    Either way, Halfrauds’ “mecahnics” are notorious – I’ve seen a fee highly dangerous errors from my local brach and suggest you get the entire bike checked over by someone competent as there may well be other issues.

    Boardman make great bikes, it’s a shame about the retailer! 🙁

    I get (in all weathers) about 3000 miles before the gritty feeling returns and gets on my nerves and i replace it..very smooth when new and easy to fit

    Price-wise there isn’t a lot
    Price-wise there isn’t a lot to choose between the two chain sets Pans, a tenner separates them at most stores. But the old, discontinued Gossamer is now hard to find which is probably why they swapped for a SRAM.
    Speaking personally I would rather have the SRAM, my impressions of their stuff are good, whereas I know a few people who have commented on the short life of some FSA gear.

    With a nearly new bike like yours I would continue to press Halfords until it feels right, not nearly right or almost right. A letter to their Head Office might help if your next trip proves of no use.
