Strava etiquette (tongue in cheek).

A friend I follow on Strava generally posts some pretty epic, hilly / fast rides. He’s always been a touch boastful of his cycling which I’ve generally ignored. However, lately he seems to have stepped up a gear and is bragging more and more of his accomplishments. In my mind bragging about Strava accomplishments is the equivalent of a TOWIE actor posing for photos on the red carpet at the BAFTA Awards; in the real world you’ve accomplished nothing! This is Strava, not the UCI!
On top of this he’s now posting every single piece of exercise he does. Four rides yesterday, longest ride = 6km. Last week he posted a 1hour swim. FFS!

My question is: How should I unfollow? Should I be courteous and send my best wishes explaining politely why I’m unfollowing, or merely disappear like a thief in the night?

I should have made it more clear that this piece was intended to be light hearted and not to be taken too seriously. The athlete in question is a friend I’ve known for years and will no doubt continue to do so.

To all the people saying they
To all the people saying they need to record every single session, no matter how small, for their overall mileage/time, doesn’t Strava add it if you make them private sessions too? I thought it did…

Also, OP needs to go overboard and keep telling his mate how much seeing his virtual trophies means to him, I mean really pile it on.

    I’m one of those annoying
I’m one of those annoying stravaists who uploads everything. It might seem silly to some but its interesting to know total mileage and time on the bike. Last week I covered a measly 40 miles, but most of this was on the BMX at the track and doing uphill sprint repeats. I was honestly surprised at the distance that I covered.

I don’t use Strava. All my rides are recorded on my iPhone, using a similar App. Nobody else sees it, as my personal riding/running performance is only ever going to be of interest to me. I had a cracking ride out today. A new personal best, but who cares? Only me.

    The important thing to
The important thing to remember about Strava is that if you’re not careful about how you use it or relate to it, it can make you appear like a bell-end.

    Take care…

I thought the point of strava
I thought the point of strava was to motivate you. Nothing worse than seeing someone kicking your arse who you should be beating. If you can’t take the heat unfollow 😀

    I have some friendly banter
I have some friendly banter with friends over their Strava times but I try not to bombard.
I’m one who uploads everything so I know my monthyl and end of year totals…probably annoying to see me upload 2miles but it means something to me.

Can’t see the issue here. He
Can’t see the issue here. He records stuff with strava. Isnt that the idea. I record my 3 mile runs – so i have a log of my mileage. If I ever swam – I’d do that too.

It’s not boasting – its just recording. Does he save the files as ‘Look at my greatness – i have cycled 6km !!’ ?

If he doesnt then I think the problem is with you really ?

Presumably you followed him ? Or did he force you to ?

    Either speak to him about
Either speak to him about whatever issues with him or just unfollow him, either of those is better than posting on a forum to bitch about it.
