Although it’s still rather warm out, winter is definitely on its way, and as the temperatures plummet, so too does rain. And Crankbrothers recognises that riders need different kit for riding through the wet stuff, so it has unveiled the Trail Speed Lace Seal shoes. Designed to ‘challenge the status quo’, the brand reckons these kicks solve the problems that other waterproof shoes suffer from.

Available in clipless and flat-pedal options, the Trail Speed Lace Seal gets an interesting 360-degree ankle wrap, as well as a neoprene cuff. What this is here to do is prevent water from filtering through to the inside of the shoe. Then, a waterproof membrane sheds water while allowing sweat and perspiration to escape.

Moving to the shoe’s sole, the flat pedal version uses a new Hydro rubber compound. This has been developed especially for wet weather and is a super-soft compound that’s said to provide ‘maximum friction’ on wet surfaces. The clipless pedal version of the shoe uses a blend of Crankbrothers’ MC1 and Hydro rubbers, with the former found around the cleat box for durability, whereas the latter coats the toe and heel to boost grip. Both soles use the Trail tread pattern, which, we’re told, is built for traction off the bike while optimising the interface with the pedal.

There are then special stiffness zones in the shoe’s outsole, with a stiffer portion found throughout most of the shoe, while the toe boxes receive a touch of flex in a bit to boost pedal feel and walkability. Speaking of the toes, a TPU toe box has been thrown in for protection.

Lastly, the Trail Speed Lace Seal rocks reflective details and a speed lace closure.

If you’re in the market for a fresh set of waterproof shoes, the Stamp (flat pedal) version will set you back £199.99 and the Mallet (clipless) is £219.99. We’ve got a pair in for test, too, so keep your eyes peeled for a review coming soon.
