The Alpkit Glider road bike frame bag is well thought out and well made. I found it to be way more useful in a wider variety of situations than I thought it would be. Initially, I was just going to use it on a week’s tour in Scotland and see how it went with that scenario. However, I fitted it six weeks before leaving to check the attachment of it to my bike and to give it an initial test run and it ended up staying put.
Once you’ve measured the length available under your top tube and ordered the correct size, you then need to attach the bag to your bike.
The Glider comes with a roll of double sided Velcro style strip for this. One side is soft and the other is harder to touch. I decided to start in the middle of the top tube and go from there. As the bike in question has an external and open brake cable, I thought it would be interesting to see whether there would be a problem with interference.

The bag’s attachment strip sat on the underside of the tube and the Velcro loop went under the cable. The ends overlapped by an inch with the soft side against the paint. The brake worked properly.
The next two Velcro loops I decided to put beyond the cable stops. I then attached the down tube loop, followed by the seat tube loop.
The bag sat really neatly and securely on the bike. You could apply frame protector should you wish, but I found no paint rub after weeks of use.
Riding
The Glider was really stable once fitted and didn’t sway when riding.
It was narrow enough (4cm wide) that I didn’t get knee rub, although if you overstuffed it you might.

I really liked how useful it was, particularly in changeable weather. My wife has started riding seriously again after a break, and it meant that I could carry her stuff as well as my own. I ended up riding with empty pockets as the Glider took everything, which I rather liked. I also appreciated having everything easily to hand.
Function
The left side of the bag offers a slim, full length pocket, while the right is a deeper, full length pocket with a mesh section to hold keys, a wallet, or maybe a battery as there is an exit point for a cable.

In addition, there are two loops on the upper section of the larger pocket into which you can strap tent poles. For this 50cm long version, you could get 40cm+ poles in easily. Alpkit also offers 46cm and 48cm versions for smaller frames.

The zips were well weather sealed and worked nicely throughout the test period. I liked that when closed they had extra protection under the rubberised ‘nose’ of the bag.

On my bike, there was still enough room to fit two 500ml bottles underneath the bag. The front bottle was easier to remove, so once empty, I’d just swap them over. My frame is a 55cm with a 50cm (underneath measurement) top tube.
Touring
Whilst it wasn’t really wide enough to carry a lunchtime roll, the Glider could carry all of my other bits and bobs that I wanted easy access to throughout the day: phone, wallet, small lock, bungee, multitool, pump, gilet, snacks etc. It felt stable even when well laden.
We had a variety of rain scenarios in our Scottish June/July trip, and the Glider didn’t have any issues at all. My phone and wallet were in dry bags regardless, but water didn’t seem to be getting in. I had a few paper map sections in there, and they didn’t even get damp despite no additional protection.

In terms of aesthetics, you can’t always know whether something looks good until you try it for real. My expectations were exceeded in this area. I thought that the Storm Grey worked really well against the lighter blue of my bike – another reason why I just left it on the bike after the initial fitting. Black, brown and green versions are also available.
Value
The Ortlieb Frame Pack Top Tube Bag (£110 and £120) is very waterproof, as you’d expect from the German brand. However, overly long straps and only two sizes (3L and 4L) might mean that it might not work optimally with your frame. Matt thought that it was a “very high quality [bag] with utterly dependable waterproofing” though and both versions offer more carrying capacity than the 2.2L you’ll get from even the 50cm Glider.
The Brooks Scape Frame Bag (£90) is only available in one size (460mm long) and the main zip isn’t 100% waterproof. However Hollis found it, “a top quality waterproof frame bag that’s perfect for bikepacking” and again it offers a 3L capacity.
The Wildcat Ocelot Frame Bag (£115) is an excellent frame bag too. However, the attachment system makes it a fit-and-forget type of bag as you can’t easily remove it. With four sizes available, you should be able to find a size that fits your frame. The 50cm large has a 4.5L capacity.
Conclusion
I really liked using this bag, and I liked its looks too. Thoughtfully designed and well made (by Suzie in this case), it has all the hallmarks of a bag that will still be in use many years from now.
