You buy a saddle that fits and forget about it until it breaks, then you’re back trawling through the internet, or through the doors of your local bike shop to buy another. For a good long time, saddles haven’t been a serviceable product, really, but Peaty’s aims to buck that trend with its all-new Monarch Saddle. We’ve got the details.

Although being able to service your saddle is a pretty cool thing in itself, Peaty’s has prioritised comfort, as it should. Promising ‘comfort for the vast majority of riders’ and ‘freedom of movement’, the brand has gone for a one-size-fits-all approach, so there’s one size on offer. The saddle is then cut with a pressure relief channel to reduce pressure in areas you don’t want it. The rear of the Monarch Saddle also uses a ramped profile to offer an extra hint of support on the climbs.

As for the padding, the Monarch uses Peaty’s Throne Foam. It’s designed to absorb impacts and reduce trail vibrations while providing the comfort that Peaty’s is after. That’s covered with a waterproof, seamless, and vacuum-sealed PU cover. The rear of the saddle is then wrapped with crash-resistant shoulders. The brand says that by not choosing to fasten the cover using staples or stitching, the saddle reduces chafing while boosting durability. It’s also made using 24% recycled plastics, scooped from the ocean, and there’s a neat grab handle molded into its lower.

But the jewel in the Monarch’s crown is the fact that it’s serviceable. It’s surprisingly often for a saddle to get a little creaky after a crash, or just a hard life on the bike, so with just 2mm and 3mm Allen keys, owners can remove the rails, give the whole saddle a clean and relube. But that also means that the rails are replaceable. On top of that, Peaty’s is pushing a sustainability angle, as users won’t have to bin destroyed saddles; rather, they can restore a heavily used Monarch to its former glory.
