Star Trek – Strange New Worlds

I’m quickly ploughing through this new Star Trek series in the 7 day free trial of Paramount+.

The original series of Star Trek  (TOS to Trekkies) was national viewing in my childhood and aside from the later series of Next Generation the producers have struggled to match the viewability of the early series.

Then a lot of modern TV series insist on a commitment from the viewer with long and complex story arcs overlaying episodes – and when those story arcs are designed to cover multiple series and then the series gets cancelled, I’m reluctant to commit to viewing a series. Picard was overly complex and tried to be too clever, Discovery had to have a couple of goes to find its feet (which reminds me, have I got time to check out the new series of that with my freebie).

So it’s been a really pleasure watching the new series. They’ve successfully rewound to a lot of what was good about TOS – these are not super-humans, they are a bit argumentative and silly, but the main goodie is we have a series, with individual stand-alone episodes, there are a couple of longer term threadlets but they are minscule, unlike Discovery. Pike is quite in the role of Kirk, bonding with aliens in the bedroom (not just a snog now) and showing off his torso.

It’s the best of the recent efforts.

I really enjoyed the choice of actors – Death is very well done and of course David Thewlis is superb in everything he does. Lucifer was also a great casting choice. By the way, there’s an excellent bonus 11th episode featuring two mini stories.

Full on Trekkie here. Loved every different series except Deep Space Nine (boldly going nowhere). Enterprise with Scott Bakula is probably my favorite.

Lower Decks is a hidden gem. It’s a cartoon and shows the lives of the ordinary workers cleaning up and fixing the replicators etc. while the higher ranks get all the glory. It’s hilarious but probably only for dedicated Trek fans.

A trans woman I was at college with recently admitted to having watched the Topa episode in tears.

It’s odd, isn’t it, that The Orville does Star Trek better than Star Trek, nowadays…  Not sure what that says about how the modern Trek showrunners view Trek itself.

I actually think SNW is on

I actually think SNW is on par with Orville, which is no bad thing as Orville is the best trek currently around (especially as they dropped the stupid jokes very early on in the series).

Agree on Sandman though. Well worth watching with the updates to the story compared to the original source improving it even more.

Discovery was fun for the first few seasons though I got a bit bored towards the end. Worth watching for Doug Jones in my opinion.

I liked the first season of Picard, but it takes itself too seriously and gets tedious.

Strange New Worlds is good, but I think I prefer The Orville as being a humourous Star Trek rip-off.

Anyhow, The Sandman is what people should be watching.

    I liked how Discovery started

I liked how Discovery started, but the whole long long complex series plots put me off.  And don’t get me started on what happened once they went a thousand years into their future…  And that ridiculous fight scene supposedly inside the turbolift shafts (which somehow seemed to have gone off into Doctor Who TARDIS territory, because there was NO WAY that they fitted inside the Discovery’s hull.  Grr)…

Glad to hear that SNW is better – maybe I’ll give Paramount’s free trial a go and drink lots of coffee to binge it đŸ˜‰

    I’m not a Trekker.  I’m not, I tells you.
