Ultegra R8000: replace cage with long one

    Hi,
I have a Canyon Grail (the one with the double handlebar). 50/34 with an 11/34 cassette. Where I live there are nice offroad tracks. They are quite steep and I’d like to replace the cassette with an 11/40. I know some people have managed to do it with the existing rear mech but I’d like to be sure it all works out ok so I thought of replacing the medium cage derailleur with a long one. Can anyone tell me how to go about it (i.e. which derailleur and cassette suggestion and if I’d have to replace any other component? Well, yeah, the chain I guess….)?
    Thanks!!

    Shimano don’t sell a long

Shimano don’t sell a long cage road derailleur.

In 34-34 you have a very low gear already, but you could squeeze a little lower by just swapping the cassette to an 11-36, SRAM 11-36 cassettes would fit.

Your Ultegra derailleur officially maxes out at 34, but they tend to be conservative. You should be able to get a 36 to work just fine.

I think I heard that road and

I think I heard that road and mountain bike shifters and derilleurs had different amount of pull, so that the newer ones were not that compatible.

Various people on here have had good things to say about the Wolftooth extender.

Thanks for that. In fact I

Thanks for that. In fact I did the calculation and I need 45t. Your suggestion might be the right one (and least expensive…)

So basically you reckon that the SHIMANO XT SGS Shadow could not be installed on my bike? This one: https://r2-bike.com/SHIMANO-XT-Rear-Derailleur-RD-M8000-SGS-Shadow-long-Cage

I’m not really sure you can

I’m not really sure you can replace the cage with a longer one…my understanding of the rear derailleur cages is the short cage (SS) goes up to 30T, and the medium cage (GS), which I think is what you have, goes up to 34T.

There might be a hack to use a mountain bike derailleur cage for a lower gear range, but I’ve not seen/heard of anything like that. Your best bet is to install a derailleur hanger extender such as https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/products/roadlink

    Hi. Thanks. I have a Shimano R8000.

The link you sent: isn’t it just for servicing a derailleur (Shimano, Campagnolo, etc…)?
