Why is my hybrid faster than my road bike?

I need some advice on a rather odd problem. I have a Hoy SA Calobra with Shimano Di2 gears. I have been riding it for about 18 months now. I’ve had a formal bike fit, and it all feels great!!

A couple of weeks or so ago I had some technical issues with the bike, and I had to ride my old bike, a Trek 7.3 hybrid. To my utter confusion, I am about a mile an hour faster on the hybrid than on the road bike. I rode exactly the same course as I usually do, and compared the graphs from the gpx files side by side. All the way through the ride, but especially on ascents, I am significantly faster!!

Does this make make any sense to any of you out there? Have I made a big mistake spending all this money on a posh road bike, when I seem to be far better on my old hybrid??

I think you need to repeat

I think you need to repeat the experiment over a number of rides and get a rough average. If still a discrepancy then maybe the old bike is simply better set up for you, more comfort often = better efficiency, maybe the gearing is more suited to maintain an efficient cadence?

    Faling that:

Is your old bike red? Red bikes are always fatser.

Are you comparing one ride on

Are you comparing one ride on the Trek with loads of others on the Hoy?  Did you have a tail wind when on the Trek?  How long is the ride?  Is the gearing on the Trek more suited to ascending?  Have you added weighty stuff to the Hoy?

So many factors influence a ride, it’s hard to say from what you have said.
