Greetings all.  I am trying to make a shortlist of bikes and have no idea what is good/bad as my knowledge in primarily a mountain biking background.  I am looking for a summer bike as my Current bike Giant Defy Advanced Pro 3 – £1,399, is turning into a winder bike.  Apart from training Monday-Thursday (about 8 hrs), I do a Club ride of about 60-70 miles, with about 4-5 100miles rides over summer.  I have no intention of racing, but I am looking at moving up into the advanced group this year so need something to help be keep up with the wiz kids 🙂

So far I have found the following
Canyon Aeroad CF SLX Disc 8.0 – £3,799
Canyon Ultimate CF SL Disc 9.0 Aero – £3,249
    Canyon Endurace CF SL Disc 9.0 Di2 – £3,599

    BMC roadmachine 02 ultegra £3,099.00
    Focus paralane ultegra £  2,999.00
Colnago V1R LTD Custom Road Bike – £3,749.99
    Look 765 Hi-Mod Ultegra Di2 L – £3,799.99

    Kind Regards
    Tony

The Paralane is a completely different type of bike to the others, have a look at a Focus Izalco or Cayo for something more comparable. Both are great value for money IMHO and each offers something slightly different from the other.

I was in the same position a couple of years back. I came to the conclusion that owning something beautiful and a little bit different was at least as important as how much spec you could get for the money. I ended up with a De Rosa Idol which I am still very much in love with. I went to a local shop to make sure I got the right size but if I was doing it again I would definitely get in touch with someone like Bike Swanky and discuss a bit more customisation for a personal build as I now have a spare set of wheels, a compact crankset, a saddle and a cassette all spare from the original build.

skmark, that is a fabulous looking bike and nice photography.

Canyon for a 50th? What are

Canyon for a 50th? What are you on! canyons are the kind of junk you buy yourself!

I would be looking at either the Colnago, Specialisima or my own personal choice would be something from Wilier like the Zero 7.

And I wouldn’t dream of putting anything from a Fishing Manufacturer on a road bike, remember how the ranges compare Dura-Ace is roughly equivalent to Veloce.

However, all that said, if I was getting a 50th birthday present I would straight of down the road to Mercian Cycles and be talking about top end steel.

You get a lot of Giant Propel

You get a lot of Giant Propel for that kind of money…

I’m 52 and was in your position about 2 years ago!  I went for a Propel, I only had around £1600 to spend, and I couldn’t find a better kitted bike that looked as good to my eyes.  The fact that it rides well is a bonus; it may not be the comfiest but I did a 27 hour Everesting on it, and otherwise use it for similar rides to those you list.

If I had your budget I would be looking at a titanium bike for sure.

Id go Colnago but then i am a

Id go Colnago but then i am a little biased as im on my 10th one (could be more)

The V1-R is a lovely bike, bit more racey than the C60 but handles just the same and at that price its a steal

The only thing i dont like is the rear brake position as it tends to get covered in crap being down there but after each ride just give it a wipe over and a little bit of GT85 now and again

That is one slick looking bike. Looks like someone has put allot of time effort and love into every inch.   I must admit I have not concerned a custom built. I am very tempted.

I must say I’m very pleased with the final result. The build took a little longer than originally planned but Jason Rourke got involved in some more Guy Martin build stuff across the summer which you can’t really blame him for.

The bike rides like a dream, the weather has tried it’s best to stop me getting out during the last 2 weeks but I did manage a good 55km yesterday morning and love it. Ride is superb, so comfortable despite the new saddle (Brooks C13….I wasn’t too sure about that). Dura-Ace Di2 is unquestionably better than me, so slick and quick. Speedplay pedals are quite stiff and will likely take a little getting used to but I’m certain that I’m going to enjoy riding this lovely machine very much…….bring on the spring.
