1x on new bike

    Hello

I am designing the new bike (custom frame) and among many things I am evaluating the 1x

I ask, obviously only to … 1x-ers, an opinion on my idea: I come from a very classic 50/34 – 11/28, with which I go everywhere. I reasoned that from the hypothetical 22 gears, if I exclude the extreme intersections (50 / 28-25 and 34 / 11-12), the ratios become 18, if I then exclude those with the same or very similar metric development I still exclude 3, and we are at 15 useful gears. Of which I use a lot  about ten and the others are in less cases (example, 34-28 on extreme slopes or 50 / 11-12 if I really want to push downhill).

After various reasoning and thousand calculations, I came to the conclusion that with a 44 chainring combined with the 12v sram 10-36 cassette I would get practically the same gears ratio and range as the current bike.

Would you make the same choice as me? or would you change something? suggestions dictated by your experience?

For info: I do not compete, I am not an agonist, I like to travel and good pace, ride long dintances and climbs, to enjoy the beauty of cycling but without any worries about performance or times (I hate strava devil )

    Thanks

The number of times you would

The number of times you would spin out on 42×11 and not be freewheeling on 50×11 is probably quite small.

I’ve just changed my chainset to 31/48 on my gravel bike. paired with 11-34 cassette.  Times when I’m still pedalling and in top gear is probably limited to tarmac downhills of about 3-5%, steeper and I’d be freewheeling, flatter and I wouldn’t need top gear

    I use 50×11 every ride,

I use 50×11 every ride, plenty of hills and usually as much downhill as uphill. Currently my road bike has 50/34 front and 11-36 (9 speed!) on the back with a 105 mech. Cross bike is 34 front and 11-46 on the back. For the road 1x I would be looking at 9-46 and maybe 44 on the front. I like a very wide range, and not too bothered by gaps.

    Unless you’re doing paceline
Unless you’re doing paceline or racing, do you need 44*10 often? For my everything bike I moved to 42*11-42 to give me enough top speed and enough climbing. When pushing on I hit top gear on the flat, but not that often – any faster downhill is freewheeling for me. 42*11 @90rpm is 27mph, 44*10 is 31mph.

    My fast bike is 48*10

Have a look at the speeds you normally pedal hard at, and pick the gearing to suit.

    When I had 1x I found it

When I had 1x I found it perfectly usable on the mostly (but not all) flat commute and riding solo. The gaps can be big and this is the main drawback – when riding with others I often found I was in the wrong gear / wrong cadence etc. When you don’t have control of the speed etc then it’s not so great…but not terrible especially if most of your rides are solo or easy cruises

Your logic seems sound to me.

Your logic seems sound to me.  If you are not wedded to going electronic Ekar may be worth a look – especially if you’d prefer all the gears on the RHS.
