Noise & Vibration When in High Gear

    Hi guys,

    First post here, im looking for a bit of advice is possible.

     

    Yesterday I was adjusting my gears and I noticed I am getting a droaning sound, a metal on metal rub sound once or twice per rotation and i can feel vibration through the pedals when in the highest couple of gears, I have also noticed it when riding.

     

    A bit of research on google pointed me to a worn chain. I purchased the bike a litte over a year ago and rode maybe a couple of hundred miles last summer, this summer since I got it out again I have ridden maybe 50 miles, seems way too soon to be getting a worn chain.

    When inspecting my bike I have noticed the following things of concern:

    • On the outer edge of the highest gear on the cassette, there is a couple of mm gap between 1 tooth and the end of the casette as a pose to it being flush against each other as with all other teeth, along with what appears to be a radial mark where metal has been scraped away between the tooth and the next one to the left. Also the tooth in question is slightly closer to the next gear down than the rest of the teeth. It would be better to show a picture however being new to this forum I cant seem to figure out how to do it. Could this be causing me any problems?

     

    • When looking at the cassette from above, when in the highest gear there is naturally a gap between the chain and the next gear down towards the rear of the bike where the chain leaves to go to the rear derailleur, however at the front of the casette where the chain leaves to go to the crankset, there is no gap and the chain appears to be rubbing against the next gear down. This is when in the highest gear on the crankset so the chain isnt at its extremes. Is this normal or should the chain not be rubbing on the next gear down at all?

     

    • There are some teeth shorter than others on the crankset. Is this normal or do I have a problem here?

    As an engineer these things dont seem right to me, however being new to cycling I thought it best to put these things out there to you more experianced people.

     

    If the above is not of any concern what do you think could be causing the noise and vibrating?

    It can be difficult to

    It can be difficult to describe, let alone understand, these things in plain text so if you can’t attach pics (or video) here perhaps try uploading them to a website you can share a URL to. But it sounds  a bit like something that needs a hand-on/in person examination.

    On your third bullet point though – it sounds as if those are just teeth designed to help the chain move more easily from one ring to another, along with pins and ramps on the outer ring. But it should pretty obvious whether it’s a design feature or wear/damage.
