Looking for some advice improving my braking. I’ve never really been hugely confident in the wet braking performance on my road bike. It could be that I’ve been spoilt rotten by the XT 180mm Discs on my XC bike. However after a near miss with a car stopping in front of me in the wet this morning I want to try some cheaper options before looking for a disc road bike. FYI I’m 6’6″ 100kg.

    Things I’ve tried so far:

    • Cleaned the rims obvs.
    • Upgrading from tektro to 105 brakes: Significant improvement, but not hard the tektros were pants.
    • Changed from stock to Dura-Ace pads, not a huge difference
    • Currently running B’TWIN extreme wet pads (cheap and red!): No change

So do the expensive Swisstop / Koolstop etc. pads really make a significant difference? Can’t help feeling they’re very expensive for little blocks of rubber (cheaper than a new bike mind)

    I fitted swissstop pads and

I fitted swissstop pads and upgraded the brake cables on my cheapy road bike and that improved the braking significantly. The cable outers on bottom of the range bikes aren’t that great and decent compression less cables like shimano sp41 or Jagwire racer pros can make a big difference

    I think you should look

I think you should look seriously at some really good brake blocks, they genuinely do make a deal of difference.  And make sure they are adjusted right up, the greatest leverage is at the start of the lever’s travel.

I would rather run Tektro brakes with genuine Campag’ blocks than genuine Campag’ brakes with Tektro blocks.

Your a really big guy, I

Your a really big guy, I think you’ll need ABS when they invent or develop it, if they haven’t already dunno!

Rough your blocks up with some sandpaper
