Rose Xeon CDX 3100 Di2

    It’s here at last !! I will update this thread again once I’ve had chance to put some mileage on the bike, this is really my experiences of it arriving and setting up.

    Firstly for completeness I should say that I placed my order on the 3rd June and it arrived on the 18th August.

    Delivery. Rose ship the bike via DHL in Germany, but then it is handed off to ParcelForce in the UK. You watch the website to find out when your delivery date will be and once PF have it they do not give any delivery estimates / updates, so you must simply wait in all day until it arrives.

    When the bike arrived it had shifted in the box. The rear hub was no longer against the small protective pad which it must have started its journey against and had left a big impression in the side of the box. There seems to be no damage to the hub. The right brake covers were also imbedded in the side of the box and covered in dust from wearing against it. A damp cloth has removed all the dust and the remaining damage is very small. Finally the plastic spacer (I assume) designed to fit in the front disc brake callipers had fallen out and was in the bottom of the box. This is worrying as the brake levers are shipped fully depressed and cable tied.

    On unpacking everything a few things strike the novice bike builder (me!). There is a manual for every component part (so a big pile of manuals). There is a no “quick setup guide” for idiots for my specification of bike. There is a big bag of spare parts which was split open.

    Due to there being no idiots guide I used the Rose book and the dummies video on the website. However the video doesn’t mention Disc brakes on a road bike, Thru Axles or Di2. The later isn’t even mentioned in the Rose guide at all. I suspected in advance that this might be an issue so had emailed Rose to make sure everything was covered, I was assured it was all dead easy and fully covered by the instructions.

    First issue was putting the front wheel on. The video / web assume you have QR on a road bike. All Thru Axle fittings I’d seen / used previously have a “flick” close mechanism like QR does, however these DT SWISS do not, after finding the manual for Wheels this confirmed that they simply twist tight ! Job done. Both wheels spin totally true and there’s no rubbing from the brake calipers during my testing.

    Next task was the disc brakes. After releasing the levers and fitting the front wheel they seem to work correctly. I do notice that there is a very small space between the Rotors and the Forks (1 or 2mm) and hope that as these become very hot this won’t be an issue. There’s also a fair amount of travel (levers) before the brakes bite, but I have nothing to compare against and haven’t actually ridden it fully yet.

    Then the big one. Di2. I obviously had not managed to connect the battery as the system was dead. Let me explain that there’s actually nothing telling you that you need to connect the battery or how to do it, but I knew the battery was in the seatpost and the wire hanging out of the bike seemed logical to fit into the post. This time I had to call Rose. Got through to someone in 5 minutes and they explained that everyone with a Di2 bike calls them with this issue (!) and my attaching the battery with my fingers wasn’t good enough I needed to use the tool. A tool I couldn’t find (searched everywhere). All very good service and they offered to send me a new too.

    So. Plan B. Bike into the car and over to the LBS. They quickly attached the battery very firmly with fingers and you heard it click home. Di2 fully operational! I simply hadn’t forced it hard enough in because I’m new to this and Di2 components might be fragile and expensive. Whilst at the LBS I also purchased and had fitted the Shimano wireless Di2 transmitter. Very neat job ! The LBS explained that the tool wasn’t much use for connecting the battery because the cable used on the connector was very thick and later I found the tool in the bottom of the box / doh !!

    Back home and immediately the Di2 transmitter paired with the Garmin 1000 and displayed the information. Flawless ! Note the Di2 software was already current enough and didn’t require updating to do this, which is a common issue. However I noticed that the Di2 is not setup correctly in terms of knowing the gears fitted. So it thinks it has a 53 / 39 up front (Compact actually fitted) and thinks that the rear cassette is off a TDF day on the flat not my 11-32, this probably doesn’t make any difference to the workings and very few people would ever care or notice. Something people might care about is that the Di2 battery level is 40% (the Garmin reports it) so if not charged in a few weeks you risk running to 25% and the FD locking onto the small ring.

    So now it’s setup and ready to go – I hope. Although I may well nip down to the LBS again before I ride it far to make sure everything is as it should be. I would have done this last night, but they were all looking to go home.

    How does it look ? Beautiful. But please beware that this is a Raw Carbon finish. Not a Matt painted uniform finish. So it looks mean, industrial and very cool. I’m not sure if I can imbed pictures here but will look into that later if anyone is interested.

    So, after 1 day and no riding I’m relieved it’s all delivered, setup and now looking forward to seeing how it rides. Sods law it’s set to raid tonight !!

    Morning Frans. I noticed a couple of times that the date went out, then came back in to the original quoted. If you have any worries just drop Rose an email (I used to do that) or call them. Mine took over 10 weeks, so at least you aren’t having to wait that long. đŸ˜‰

    I ordered a CDX 3000 on 28-07. Normally I would have the bike early september. The information on their site now says: delivery in 2 weeks?!?

    Yes I’ve noticed that the translation is sometimes imperfect. Odd German word left intact. I just cut and paste it into a translator to see what it should say.

    As you say it’s difficult to see what improvements could be made to what looks like a very impressive specification. No doubt wireless will rear its head sometime but given the need for multiple batteries (and their associated charging gubbins) I think I’d leave well alone even if offered.

    On a side note, I’ve had to remove the 25s on my other (now winter) bike and fit 23s to get the crud racer guards to fit due to tight clearances. Is is possible to fit cruds to the CDX shod with 25s given there is no brake bridge to put the cable tie round? Or are there better (i.e. ones that fit) guards to put on this particular bike?

    I believe many items on the
    I believe many items on the Rose website don’t fully translate from the German original into English. It’s good, just not quite flawless đŸ˜‰

    I think the only improvements the CDX can have in ’16 / ’17 model years are a move to standard 12mm Thru Axles and the ability to fit wider tyres. The former will be a necessary standardisation across the industry and the later is a personal choice for me. Although the 25’s fitted already balloon out slightly.

    Looking at the pictures it
    Looking at the pictures it looks like the calipers are identical (as you would expect) but the bracket is completely different. They seem to have moved the caliper round to be closer to the fork leg. I wonder if it is possible to get the updated (if that’s what it is) bracket to retrofit if someone wanted the more streamlined look?
    Might need to shorten the brake hose a tad as it looks like the caliper hose union ends up quite a bit nearer the fork.

    That’s the bit that confused
    That’s the bit that confused me. Both the dates on the website are ‘expected delivery dates’. If they said build date 2 weeks and delivery date 3 weeks that would make perfect sense. Oh well, it’ll come when it comes, just hope Parcelfarce don’t get too carried away when they chuck it in their van.

    As for the brakes I’m assuming I’ll get what they show on their site. No idea if the picture is a 15 or 16 year model (this year model bit confuses the hell out of me, same with cars, why cant they do changes on 1st January and be done with it?)

    Morning and gratz on chosing a great bike and getting such a fast delivery time. I guess this is to do with the time of year.

    Usually Rose present a couple of dates. Build date and Delivery date. Build date is when they physically build your bike in the specification you have chosen and only takes a day / two. After that it will go through a QA process for another couple of days, then sent out for delivery. Therefore Delivery date will always be a week later than Build. Hope that helps.

    As for the brakes I’m not entirely sure about the question or answer. However I understand that the 2015 bikes used the adapter / mount to fit the calipers to and ’16 bikes use the Shimano direct flat mount. However I haven’t really seen anything offical yet detailing the 2016 CDX.

    Hi, I’m new to the forum (but
    Hi, I’m new to the forum (but not new to bikes) and I have a couple of questions which I’ve tried to find answers to but failed miserably.

    I pushed the button a couple of weeks ago on a CDX 3100 Di2. When I go to the website to look at the order status it says ‘the goods are being prepared for assembly’ and a delivery date of ‘approx 2 weeks’. This bit of the order seems to cover the whole as it includes shipping costs. Further down the order is the bit about the actual bike. That also has a status of ‘being prepared for assembly’, however this bit has an expected delivery date of ‘in approx 3 weeks’. Which is confusing to say the least. So :-

    Does a list exist of the various shipping statusses (stati?) that an order goes through before it arrives at my house?

    Secondly, when looking at the pictures in this thread I noticed that the adapter bracket for the front disc caliper has a 90 degree bend and stands out from the fork leg a fair way making the caliper sit almost vertically. The current picture on the website shows a slimmer angled adapter which looks more streamlined. Does anyone know when this changed or do rose just update things on the fly when updated bits become available?

    Excellent write up of experience so far, can’t wait till mine comes =P~

    Welcome Happymanc.
    Welcome Happymanc. Manchester to London, fair to say you’ve thoroughly tested it now. Your thoughts mirror mine, these are seriously fast bikes. The discs and Di2 may add a little weight to the scales, but I think are more than worth it.

    The 11-28 must give you a lot of very close smooth gears. Being only 4/5 months back in the saddle I still need the extra range. I don’t use the top of my 11-32 very much, but when I do I’m very glad it’s there. Even with my setup I find the gears gradual and smooth, no big jumps like I used to have on my 9-speed.

    And I just love the Di2 Garmin interface.

    I had my Xeon delivered at the end of May. I had an issue where the disc brake on the front wheel was bent in delivery but rose sent another and a tool for the wheel out straight away so I cant really complain.

    What can I say about the bike, its brilliant! I went for the 28-11 at the rear and on the flats the bike is so fast, the power delivery makes it seems effortless to get up to speed and maintain it. I was a bit worried with that ratio on the hills especially coming from a triple with a granny cog but as this is much lighter than my specialized it seems to climb well and I have managed to grind up the big hills.

    I just completed the Rapha Manchester to London and the bike was perfect throughout. For that distance towards the end the Di2 were a god send and really impressed, it so nice to press a button and know that there will be no problems with your gear change. The disc brakes give confidence aswell they seem very reliable in all conditions.

    Rattle seems to be solved
    Rattle seems to be solved now, although testing this week has been limited to a 25 miler last night due to bad weather every time I wanted to ride this week. Issue seems to have been due to an unsecured cable bouncing around in the downtube. A little disappointing Rose don’t think of that happening but the quality everywhere else has been excellent, so I’ll forgive them. Besides, the LBS said they have seen this many other times with other brands.

    The PBs aren’t an illusion, this is a seriously fast bike.

    I agree Andy, the Matt finish is very stealthy! Hopefully your rattle is sorted now.
    I also have to agree about PB’s. Considering how it is always sold that it’s not the bike it’s the person, yes I can kind of agree with that statement…but, on my 30 odd mile each way commute (that I do once a week) I’ve ‘smashed’ my PB time to work by 8 minutes, and my return by 9! It’s over 2000 ft of climbing to work and a bit less on the return, but steeper climbs, so I think you can imagine how ecstatic I am with the bike!
    I try to work with just cadence and heartrate and how I feel, but to see my avg speeds jumping up, and knowing that my expended energy is going to where it should is a big thumbs up for these bikes!

    After another weekend out on
    After another weekend out on the bike it just keeps getting better and better. A combination of improving fitness and this bike is meaning that personal bests keep not only falling, but being smashed.

    Right now I couldn’t be happier with this purchase and the fact I hardly ever see another one is the icing on the cake. Almost all the people I ride with want to know more about it and the compliments it attracts for the design too are pretty much unanimous. This is one sleek looking stealth machine.

    Finally the rattle. I took it into the LBS,they took it for a quick spin, dropped the BB out to take a look and diagnosed a cable bouncing around inside the downtube. They have packed it to resolve the issue, tested it and think it’s fixed. I haven’t have the chance since to take it out and prove it, looking forward to Wednesday to give it a try.

    Great to hear you’ve joined this select club BriCee. I have a feeling that you’ll be a more experienced rider than myself having spec’d those wheels and (as you say) the 50cm is a very small frame making a very light bike. But then if we were too worried about weight we wouldn’t have spec’d Di2 and Discs đŸ˜‰

    What did you think to the Matt Black / Blue colour ?

    I’ve stuck with SPD pedals so far (Ultegra version now), the ability to walk normally in the shoes + a high degree of float are the reasons keeping me with them. But I am considering Speedplays due to even more float and bad knees.

    Got caught out in the rain yesterday. I found that the brakes will take some getting used to. Since riding as a kid we’ve become used to brakes that are less effective when wet, yet now there’s no difference at all. Unfortunately the tyres don’t have the same grip, so its very easy to lock the wheels, especially the rear and I slid along a few yards several times. My brakes have even travel left and right, so if you have much more travel on one lever than the other it might be worth getting it checked.

    No buzz here either. However I am getting some “rattle” from somewhere low on the bike when riding on badly surfaced roads. Everything is tight on the bike, so not sure what’s causing this. Further investigation required.

    Keep reporting back. Great to hear more thoughts.
