As the Vengaboys didn’t quite sing, I’m going to Mallorca.

It’s a family holiday, but I’ve been able to negotiate a day to do some cycling, so I’ve booked myself a day’s hire from one of the rental places. Nice carbon Synapse too, so happy with that.

I’m staying in Puerto Pollensa, so wondered if anyone had any recommendations for any good routes to take in on a circular ride from there?

I’m not the fittest cyclist in the world, but do fancy getting into the mountains, as well as some coastal riding. Tackling Sa Calobra is beyond me though!

Yep, café isn’t much to shout
Yep, café isn’t much to shout about. Views are though.

I rode it last March (2014) so may well have been re-done. At the time I understand no-one of the number of owners of the road would pay for it to be done – it went from smooth lovely tarmac to pot-holed hell just at the left turn at the far side of the climb, by the beach turn off.

    I think the Formentor
I think the Formentor Lighthouse road may have been resurfaced as I rode it earlier this month and don’t remember it being bad apart from the last 100m or so once through the gateposts at the lighthouse. Café there seemed a bit of a rip off though.

    Plenty of great routes from
Plenty of great routes from PP.

    1) Out to Selva, up the climb to Lluc (lovely climb, not too steep), coffee at café there followed by epic downhill back to Pollenca. Only about 50 miles though…

http://ridewithgps.com/trips/4323661 (Ignore the getting lost bit to the Pollenca roundabout)

    2) If you want more, a much much bigger one would be out on the Ma-2200 and Ma-10 to Lluc, and on up the Puig Major, over to Soller. Soller to Bunyola, over the Ma-2100 to Orient, then Lloseta, Selva and home. That’s a pretty big route, probably 100 miles and lots of climbing.

    3) On the way out on the long route above, before the Puig major climb you’ll pass the turn to Sa Calobra (Ma-2141), you could just drop down, turn round and ride back to Lluc, then down to Selva and home. Be warned, Sa Calobra gets busy with traffic if you’re there in high season, and its not much fun with coaches and confused hire-car drivers all over the show.

One route I’d avoid is the ride to the Formentor lighthouse. It looks great on paper but more than 1/2 of it is on a terrible road surface (or it was up to a year ago, may have finally been improved), and if you’re in Mallorca you may as well take advantage of the good roads, which most of the others are.

    Route link starting from Port
Route link starting from Port D’Alcudia up to Lluc.

This route goes clockwise which takes in quite a tough climb from mile 20, the descent back to Pollenca is nice though. Feel free to pull the route and do as you please with it.
