Hey guys, I’m new to the forum. Been checking out the reviews and content on road.cc for nearly two years now, but the day has come when I need your advice. About 4 weeks ago I was beginning this years riding with the goal of taking part in a 100 miler in the name of Alzheimer’s in June. I have always held a reasonable fitness level through visiting the gym 3 to 4 times a week and playing football (this doesn’t translate into the best fitness type for cycling). I was playing football on that fateful night, turned on the spot to chase down a ball and bam my right leg has collapsed on me. Everything from the knee and above has rotated 90 degrees but my Tib, fib and ankle have stayed planted in the ground. Leaving me unable to take any weight off my trailing leg, the knee has dislocated and left me in a crumpled mess on the floor. The NHS have been fantastic getting me under the knife for a knee arthroscopy within 2 weeks, where they diagnosed cartilage tear, chondral flap damage and unfortunately a complete tear of my anterior cruciate ligament. My question is how long will it take to get back on the bike after the first surgery, what are the implications of riding without an ACL and will I able to get enough training in my legs to be able to complete the charity ride? I say the first surgery as it is likely that they will be going back in to reconstruct the ligament. I’m working on this being after the charity event as if it is before then it’s game over unfortunately as it is quite a lengthy rehabilitation.
