This is driving me berserk. On my spangly new Park stand the gears are perfect and shift seamlessly (one year old Forme Ax Edge Pro with Ultegra 10 sp cassette). Mount up and pedal away and I miss changes up and down – not always on the same shift – and only 1:20 probably go awry. What might be wrong?

I’m new to bikes (after 30 years away) but have been known to strip and rebuild an engine with impunity so not a complete novice.

Cables appear to be OK on the outside, is there a test to see? This is my first ‘proper’ bike so couldn’t compare it with experience I regret.

I’ll have a look at the rest of the derailleur tomorrow.

A long shot but I noticed this other road.cc thread on Ultegra 10-speed cassette issues http://road.cc/content/forum/137954-cassette-spacer-confusion
If you follow the link provided by a commenter http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40004&t=12991943&p=19211950 you will see a comment about wobbly cassettes if the spacers are installed incorrectly. You have a relatively new bike so possibly the builder may have created the problem.

Totally agree these would be things to check but wouldn’t these also show up on the stand?

Could something related to his weight being applied cause this? For example: deflecting the chain ring which would mess up the high/low setting or the wheel hub being too free?

Having read my post I would like to point out it was the engines that were stripped and not me.

I hope that clears up any confusion. :S
