Bit of advice of shaving legs….? (16 y/o)

    Hey

So (I don’t know if this is normal or awkward but…) I’ve been cycling MTB and road for over a year now and I’m considering shaving my legs for the simple reason (not that it is more areo – which I’m sure it doesn’t make any difference) that it looks pro!
First question, why do cyclists actually shave their legs? I mean the aerodynamic improvements can’t be that big. =D>

And moving on to the more tricky stuff… How do you actually do it?!
With only being 16, I’ve never actually wet shaved my face (used an electric razor instead) so the thought of taking a series of blades to my legs is a terrifying prospect! 😀

A few complications which have presented themselves having given thought to this issue include:
    1) How far up the legs do you go?
    2) what kind of razor do you need?
    3) how often to you need to re-shave?
    4) on the first time of shaving, how do you remove the fluffy hair without clogging up the razor?
    5) how long does it take to shave them?
    6) how do you reach the backs of the thighs? Surely that requires a lot of contortion!
    7) you probably do not have this problem but how can I convince my mum to buy a razor with blades and let me shave my legs? She panicked when my brother started wet shaving saying its pointless and he’d only cut him self?!

Thanks in advance for answering even though I’m possibly being a bit OTT with this issue. :&

    Dan

Oh, don’t use a straight razor, well do if you are bored and fancy a challenge, you get a great finish and an adrenaline surge when you realise you are finished and still have a leg :-)

Ooohhhh not seen that happen before! Is it not a pain to go all the way up if you’ve gotta do the bit that lives just under the bum? This is why white shorts should definitely be banned.

+1 on not straight. Word of the day “PIVOT” (Ross Gellar stylee)

    1) How far up the legs do you go? — about a couple of inches above the “tan line” (where your shorts normally start) is fine, there’s really no need to go all the way to the top! I don’t understand why so many guys go all the way?? Even most women don’t!

I’m not sure shops will sell anything with blades in it to 16yr olds?

Really, even ‘safety’ razors? Oh. In that case I apologise.

Not to be ‘that guy’ but everyone needs a Sheldon moment…
Actual Safety Razors have the removable single blades, I was issued them when I was in the Army…I hated those things, really hated them….hated them more than I hate football

….Ok ill stop being that guy now….

According to the Offensive Weapons Act 1996 it is an offence to sell a razor blade to someone under 18, but it also says…this legislation does not apply to folding pocket knives if the cutting edge of the blade is less than 3 inches or 7.62cm. Nor does it apply to replacement cartridges for safety razors, where less than 2mm of the blade is exposed.

So I would assume the Razor Blade is the safety razor blade, but a Mach3 is fine

You could also use some hair
You could also use some hair removal cream, its a bit easier….

As far as convincing your parents, its a difficult one to answer, but it really depends on your relationship with them, I think if you explain that its better when it comes to road rash as already mentioned, but its also better when you want to use embrocation cream

if all else fails, show them this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t7fpG8Y-EM

Oh also, just remember you’ll only end up with cuts if the razor doesn’t go vertically. If you accidentally move it sideways at all you’re likely to get a cut, so just keep it going upwards as straight as possible and you’ll be fine. 🙂

I’m a bird, so hopefully I can help as I’m old hat at this lark 😉 but in all seriousness I also (in a totally not weird way) do my other halfs as well… you men have ridiculously bony legs >.< 1) How far up the legs do you go? -- about a couple of inches above the "tan line" (where your shorts normally start) is fine, there's really no need to go all the way to the top! I don't understand why so many guys go all the way?? Even most women don't! 2) what kind of razor do you need? -- sounds weird (again) but women's razors are quite nice as they have a strip of aloe for moisturising and are less likely to cause razor burn, the Venus disposables are fine & they have a good pivot. Mens razors have really fine, close blades which I've found don't work so well on leg hair. 3) how often to you need to re-shave? -- Once a week. I do Fridays because Sat/Sun are race days. 4) on the first time of shaving, how do you remove the fluffy hair without clogging up the razor? -- You just have to crack on, keep rinsing the razor. Or you can use Veet hair remover at first and then start shaving once it starts growing back. 5) how long does it take to shave them? -- 3 mins per leg. 6) how do you reach the backs of the thighs? Surely that requires a lot of contortion! -- it's not that bad if you're not going all the way to the top, if you're in the shower just cock your leg up so you can see under your leg, if you're in the bath just pull your leg up towards you. 7) you probably do not have this problem but how can I convince my mum to buy a razor with blades and let me shave my legs? She panicked when my brother started wet shaving saying its pointless and he'd only cut him self?! -- This I cannot help with!! You're 16 and you're in to a sport, you could be doing a lot worse off than shaving your legs. Maybe ask her for advice! 🙂 On gel/foam, I don't use anything but my nickname is "asbestos-skin-morgan" so i suppose that's a personal preference. Note of interest is a lot of pro guys have said to me they wax as it's only a months worth of pain that someone else does for you & lasts a lot longer....

I have no advise to give here, I just wanted to say, he’ll find it hard to buy razors himself as he’s only 16, most places will only sell to 18+ these days 😉

    Type shaving into the search
Type shaving into the search bar and there are a few very long threads on the subject from the summer.
Personally I normally just use a trimmer (0 grade, no guard) once or twice a summer. I am not a very zealous shaver but have gone for the full shave a few times. If the blade is good enough for your face it is good enough for you legs, just have a sink of warm water to hand to rinse regularly, if you have pretrimmed it shouldn’t be too hard.
And under the thigh/knee/calf is easy just put you foot up on the sink.

I prefer shaving gel, but my wife just uses shower gel. I think men tend to be more fastidious about their shaving than women though.

    1) all the way, 2) also mach3 3) about twice a week, once a week in winter when my legs don’t see the light of day 4) hair clippers 5) about 5 min – I do it standing in the shower now – my wife laughs if I take longer than 5 min 6) use both hands , bending 7) even as a teenager I always bought my own razor blades, shaving cream and condoms.

    =)) =)) =))

I do. Just cause I do,
I do. Just cause I do, there’s the advantage of road rash is easier to clean dress and live with on smooth legs but the reality is I start and now can’t stand hairy legs
    1 – all the way
    2 – Mach 3
3 – every few days I go over it
    4 hair clippers/beard trimmer
5 first time was a fair while, now it’s no more than 5-10 min
6 bit of bending and using other hands etx and practice
    7 pass!
