Hi, I want to upgrade my Bianchi Sprint’s rim brake wheels. It came with Shimano RS100 weels as standard and I’m thinking to upgrade them with a lighter and performing tubeless ready rim with a max budget of 800€. I’m looking for new aluminium wheels for greater durability instead of used carbon wheels especially as sometimes i have to drive on bad roads.

I got my eye on the Vision Trimax 35KB (600€) and DT Swiss pr 1400 dicuit oxic 32 (800€). The black coated is obviously not really necessary, but they’re awesome.

Any  thoughts?

I recently got a new set of wheels from RyanBuildsWheels.co.uk and very happy with both the service and the wheels. But other options are available!

One advantage of hand-built wheels is that when the rims wear out (which, on a rim brake bike, they inevitably will) the hubs and spokes can be re-used on a new rim. Some “off-the-shelf” wheels use standard hubs/spokes and so can be re-built anyway, but something like the Visions look like they use proprietary spokes/hubs which means you would need to find the exact same rim (which is not normally sold separately) or else bin the lot. It’s also a pain if you break a spoke – you can get spare spokes for Vision wheels but you would need to order them specially, where as any bike shop in the country will be able to replace a Sapim spoke.

Talk to Harry Rowlands – you

Talk to Harry Rowland – you’ll get a very good set of wheels for much less than that.  I have some 1450g Kinlins (Hunt relabels their rims) that cost less than GBP 400 which are tubeless, stylish and Paris-Roubaix proof (or you could just pay GBP 800 for the Hunts!).  There’s also the even lighter Mavic Open Pro USTs which I also have, but they’re not as robust. 

Also, don’t assume that carbon wheels are less robust. I suspect that he could build you a carbon rimmed set for GBP 800, but they’ll be a similar weight – and braking in the wet isn’t as efficient on rim brakes.

Yepp, lots of options out

Yepp, lots of options out there but DCR would get my vote too.  Another good option would be the Hunt range, pretty similar to handbuilts but off the shelf.

Oh, not sure the Vision wheels noted are tubeless ready.

You could get some much

You could get some much better, lighter wheels built for that sort of money. Talk to David at DCR wheels, he built some lovely wheels for me that are lighter than either of those, and can be rebuilt when the rims wear out. https://dcrwheels.co.uk/

Other wheelbuilders are also available, I’m sure others will have recommendations.
