Stolen bike returned after nearly 4years

Recently I went into a cycle shop in York. Inside for service was a bike which I noticed was very similar to one I had stolen in April 2018 from the centre of York. At the time two bikes were taken. On further inspection and after leaving the shop on two occasions I realised that the bike was actually mine. I informed the staff in the shop and also contacted the police. The police could do nothing until I could prove the bike was mine. This I did later that day by sending numerous photos of the bike which showed a number of changes made by me. I had not registered the bike on the bike register and didn't have a copy of the frame number. Please ensure that you register your bikes on bike register with all details you can. I was lucky to have a number of good photos showing my bike in detail, so could prove it was mine. I had the bike returned to me the next day.

My stolen bike turned up after 3 years.  Had it registered on  findthatbike.co.uk.   Weirdly it was just moved into the hands of a roofer who had recently given me a roofing quote who happened to check the site.  As I had moved on and the insurance had paid out I let him keep it.

Wow. How did the bike shop end up with it?

It had been serviced a few times by them. The keeper? Said to the police that they found it by the river and reported it at the time. But the police could not find any record of this from back then. I have my suspicions but with no proof, nothing can be done.
