Red Lion and Pineapple Cycle Bypass, Acton

Happy New Year everyone, and a trivia question.

The Red Lion and Pineapple corner in Acton High Street.

Around 2013, the corner was squared off and a new strange cycle "bypass" cutting the corner was added.

What's going on? An attempt to address "left-hook" risk?

At some point left-turns were prohibited at this junction. I suspect the short section of shared pavement is to allow cycles to continue to turn left.

Thanks.

That would, I take it, be a different layout if done now.

I presume with something like a separated left filter mobility lane - there's plenty of room to do it.
