My problem is that my Viner (Planet X) steerer has a non-standard inner diameter – a star nut simply passes through, and the adjustable bungs struggle a bit too.

I initially had quite a pricey Problem Solvers adjustable spacer model – this was a fiddle to adjust as it needed two 30mm flat spanners, plus I’ve gone and rounded the 2mm Allen bolt that secures it. I’ve now gone for a more substantial ABR £6 one. The ABR looks nicer fitted than the pictures suggest, but it is a bit MTB chunky.

I’ve mounted it with plain spacers above and below to make the adjustment easier to access, and so far, so good. It needed a bit of help from a rubber mallet to get it started on the steerer, but as a tight fit, it seems to be possible to adjust it from just one of its two parts. Having this saves you having to loosen off your stem bolts and top bolt each time your adjust.

Not quite sure what you’re intended to use on it, looks like maybe a b/b tool, but I’ve sufficed with a secure mole grip to fine-tune the tension on the head bearing.  Might add some threadlocker.  This frame was my second attempt at facing a head tube some years ago and I’m not sure if revising that wouldn’t come amiss.
