Lockdown Cycling – Speeding Motorist Epidemic

I’ve been loving these quiet roads during lockdown but noticed motorists speeding (we’re talking A LOT over the limit; 50mph through a 20mph village for example) which is getting progressively worse every day. Waving an arm to ‘slow down’ is usually met with a horn and 2 fingers. My wife suggested that some people aren’t coping with this lockdown and going out on the road ‘motorbike style’ for a ‘burn’ (generally the motorcyclists stick to the speed limit on urban roads and through villages).

Pictures of every pass from an hour ride last Friday. Apart from the obligatory Audi driver overtaking both the white van and myself into a blind bend, and the technical overtake at a pedestrian crossing (but view was entirely clear) all passes were wide and clear with several drivers waiting patiently for a clean overtake.

I have to say that with the quiet rods, I have noticed a lot more patience from motorists. Many pass with plenty of space, more so than ever, many go completely over the centre line, which is nice. Also, If I am passing a pedestrian and I am giving them a wide berth, most motorists stay well back, and pass safely once I’ve passed the pedestrians and pulled back in. Apart from one knob, a motorcyclist last weekend. As I was giving some dog walkers a wide berth, on a straight but quiet country lane, he came up behind me sounding his pathetic horn and shouting for me to get over. I threw a wobbler at him, and motioned for him to pull over so I could twat him, from 2 metres of course. He didn’t stop. Silly twat.

I’ve been out once for a short local loop since the lockdown and noticed the same. A lot less traffic, but people seem to be driving like nutters or saints, there’s no inbetween.

For various reasons I’ve been driving far more during the current restrictions. But I have experienced a lot of tailgating and close passes, in my car. A lot of motorists are definitely taking advantage of the police’s attention being elsewhere…

Same round my way, generally given plenty of room by the speeders though.

Also a lot of upright electric scooters on the road too, seem pretty rapid, estimate easy 30mph.
