Bottom bracket question..

    I replaced my bottom bracket (Praxis M30) in Feb as the bearings felt rough and I had a bit of a creak when putting down a bit of power. I’ve just noticed the same sort of creak, and removing the cranks this weekend, the bearing on the non-drive side of the BB feels really rough again. It’s not something that’s noticeable when pedalling, and actually the pedals feel ok when spinning, but just spinning the bearing with a finger feels awful – not smooth at all like the drive side. Do I need to replace it? & does that suggest I’m doing something wrong?! 3 months for a BB seems to suggest I am.

    I was referring to the crank bolt, which is what bechdan said he meant by preload bolt – that has a rated torque. I have a BSA threaded BB, not like the one in that video, and its rated to 40nm…

    looks like the same

    looks like the same arrangement as SRAM gxp, and if so clamps the nds bearing both sides and wrecks it in short order, especially if the frame is not correct in the bottom bracket area.

    When you say ‘less torque’,

    When you say ‘less torque’, are you actually installing it as per this video? It says the M30 should tighten up until the thread bottoms out and that is the correct torque.

    Yeah that will be it, same
    Yeah that will be it, same bolt different name. Seems strange it’s the non drive side so could indicate a fault with the bearing or possibly damaged during installation. Can’t think of anything else. I would replace the bearing then and monitor mileage.

    Forgive my ignorance – what’s
    Forgive my ignorance – what’s the preload bolt? I’ve never touched anything other than the main bolt to remove the crank, and I’ve always made sure that’s at the correct torque.

    Premature bearing failure is often due to over tightening the crank preload bolt
