I would visit my LBS first (who stocks both brands 🙂 ) and examine/sit on them both before deciding.

I would choose steel over alu
I would choose steel over alu every time!

I love my Equilibrium 20. Solid, fast, comfortable. The only downside I would say is that it doesn’t have rack mounts, but then I don’t think the Defy does either.
