Okay folks, I’m looking to buy a steel tourer for under a grand (using cycle scheme) though I can stretch to an extra £100. Current possibilities that I’ve seen so far are:

-Genesis CdF (needs mudguards and racks)
    -Revolution Country Explorer
    -Charge Filter Hi (needs racks)
-Raleigh Sojourn (over budget and with Sora shifters 🙁 )

Have you guys got one these bikes or have you any other suggestions? Any advice is welcome.

    Haven’t ridden the Revolution

Haven’t ridden the Revolution Explorer but have bought no fewer than 4 of their bikes over the years. They are tough and excellent value for money. And the after-sales service is professional, easily the equal of any other company I’ve encountered.

And no, I don’t work for them!

    Thanks Manglier but it sounds
Thanks Manglier but it sounds like the frame is too small, I need a 23 inch but it is a tempting offer.

I have an unused Dawes Galaxy 21″ up for grabs for £400. It has canti brakes however. PM if you are interested.

    Thanks Netclectic, I have
Thanks Netclectic, I have considered a Kona Sutra but prices have risen from the magic £999.99 to £1200. A couple of friends own Sutras and have said very good things about their machines apart but they are heavy apparently.

I heard Surly have brought out a Cross Check with discs too but I can’t find prices for it. 🙁

What kind of touring are you
What kind of touring are you planning on doing?

I love my Surly Long Haul Trucker which I managed to get on the CTW scheme a few years ago when they were still under the magical £1000. It doesn’t have disc brakes and you have to add your own racks but I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

A fellow tourer pal rides a Kona Sutra, it does come with disc brakes and racks and seems to get the job done.

Forgot to add the bike must have disc brakes, after living in the wet west country I want to be able to stop quickly in the wet as well as the dry.
