Dorset Police

Back in 2017 Dorset Police announced their Operation Close Pass, but then nothing happended. It is no longer on thier website, and when I called them about 2 extremely close passes this morning, they were not interested. I don't ride with a camera, which means I have no evidence. I knew they could do nothing about the incidents today, but I had hoped to direct them to a good place to send officers out on bikes, as on these particular roads, dangerous passes are common. My commute is only 5.5 miles, it took 16 minutes this morning. In that time the same driver tried to drive me off the road twice, and brake checked me. Then less than 5 minutes later I was passed by a van leaving less than 20cm gap. I was doing 25, he was approaching 60.

We must not fall into a safe sense of security when our local force announces these schemes, as they don't do anything, but if they do it's a 1 off. Let's keep the pressure on them.

The only thing on Dorset Police website is that they are cracking down on cyclists and fining them.

I obey traffic lights, don't ride on pavements, have lights and insurance. I've been knocked off 5 times in last 4 years, none my fault. I do ride at pace, but try not to put myself into danger, but drivers pulling out on you, or opening drivers door when in a queue of traffic are sometimes impossible to avoid.

My sister was killed while cycling by a speeding driver over 30 years ago, and I am coming to the point I feel I will be too. I don't want to give up cycling as I love it, and average over 100 miles a week, but I'm having to have to reconsider my hobby as it's just too dangerous. Channel 5's doco may have some part to play, but they only played on something that is already there

I'd get a camera if I were you and start reporting for what it's worth. At least you can sue or something in a non fault accident if the police do nothing?
