Nightmare scenario,

 

Travelling behind a car 30mph through Chorlton via Barlow Moor Road. Hit a huge pothole, managed to stay on but it has smashed my wheel, and the beading where the tyre seats itself. So they tyre is ruined and so is the front wheel. It happend just outside Ken Fosters Cycling shop, so they wrote me an invoice for the damage immediately. I have pictures of the pothole but im not sure where I go to first?

Manchester Councils webste doesnt seem to have a claiming process? Just a page to report the pothole?

Advice is desperately needed, the bikes not 4 months old 🙁

Fill that hole has a map showing all the hazrds that have been reported via their website – I believe theye are then passed on to the relevant organisation – may help if the oe you rode into had been reported but not actioned

Brilliantly, MCC changed the

Brilliantly, MCC changed the depth of potholes deemed dangerous a few years ago. So, whereas before a 1″ deep pothole was deemed worthy of repair, they simply tripled it to 3″. In a stroke they saved themselves thousands in repair costs as all the potholes previously worthy of repair were struck off the list. This is cost cutting, local authority style 😉

Dave, I also read the step by step guide online.

The pothole wasnt marked, so hadnt been inspected. I think my issue is going to be whether the pothole had been previously reported and then they hadnt deemed it dangerous. I have attached pictures so you can see the hole and damage it has caused.

I would claim on the insurance but the bike is that new i hadnt had chance to update the details 🙁

I need some positivity here#

There’s a national code that outlines the process of inspecting roads and fixing potholes. if the council has followed due process then you’ll not have any joy, so your job is to find out that they didn’t.

It depends in part when they knew and how bad the pothole was at that point.

In the first instance I’d report the pothole here. They have a duty to inspect the road so hopefully it will be repaired and not happen again:

Then contact the council (they’re very coy about phone numbers on their website, but the main switchboard is 0161 234 5000). Ask to speak to the Citywide Neighbourhood Services dept. A few years go I got a refund from a similar incident, the person I dealt with was called Amanda Kenneally, on 0161 908 5767. I’ve no idea if she still works there, and I can’t recall how I got in touch with her. Possibly I filled out a form of some kind (MCC loves you to fill out forms, saves them employing someone to do it for you).

Another route you can go down is fill in this form. Not sure what happens after you do it. I’ve worked at MCC and would recommend you constantly hassle them – like all councils they’re paired right down and things can slip through the cracks. It took about 4 months to get the refund from them I mentioned above.

I did a search for highways claim and nothing obvious, although 2 results were 111% relevant.
Unless you can go in person, I’d fill in the form you had as a starting point. This may give you a contact number or team.
Clearly they don’t want anymore claims.
