Red jersey for the Tour de France (or any other grand tour)

Some of us of a certain age will remember the days when the TDF had a red jersey for the intermediate sprints competition. Sean Kelly won it multiple times but was also targeted by many other riders. In the end it was scrapped in favour of just having the green points jersey.

This TDF has been great because a few more stages than usual have seen the sprinters going for green jersey points at the intermediates which has made me pine for the days of old when they were all contested.

These days, in most GT’s, we all to often see three or four riders from the lesser teams go in the break to simply show off their sponsors logo and really just roll past the intermediate sprints…however…a red jersey would give a much needed boost to the breaks imo.

so…a question…Would anybody else like to see the reintroduction of the red jersey?

(I’ve tried to see how I can pose the question to the Eurosport commentators, in paticular Sean Kelly, but can’t find out how to do it…does anybody know?…I know they like their questions)

2 intermediate sprints in each stage but only one counted towards the points competition and different points were awarded in each competition.

If I remember correctly it ended up as a battle between 2 Italians from PC teams.

Yeah they did…it was a bit messy really though, kinda like a half hearted thing. It was a really good way to liven up flat stages back in the day.
