I have just got back into my road biking after an extended break and I have also moved up to the Yorkshire Dales from a far flatter area. My current 15 year old Bianci has a compact on the front and only a 26/14 (?) on the back, and quite frankly when the hills arrive, which is most of the time, I’m up out of my saddle. To give you an idea, a typical ride from home of 45 miles will consist of between 4000 to 5500 feet of climbing. I live in Swaledale between Buttertubs and Grinton Moor! 🙂

 

Not being into the technical language, what type of bike/ gearing should I be looking for with a price tag of up to £1000. My current bike is a 54cm frame, though it is probably a little too big for me but I am used to it and like the position. I’m 5’8″ and 31″ inside leg.

The bike is only a 7 speed sprocket and being 15 years old, I can’t just buy a new sprocket so I have to go for a new bike.

A 32 sproket on the back will help no end – no need to get a new bike if easier climbing is all you’re after. You’ll probably need a new, medium cage, rear derailleur to accommodate it though. You could also go for smaller gears on the front as well – 46/32 or something like that.

If you get on with the 54 frame, why do you think it’s too big? If you’re too stretched out, then stick a shorter stem on the front. I am about the same height as you, and would generally go for a 52, but have had a 54 in a Specialized and there wasn’t much difference. I do have a shorter inside leg than you though.

My bike built for on-road cycling in the Dales is an alu frame with a Shimano 105 5703 triple road chainset, XT 11-34 10-speed cassette and XT M772 9-speed rear derailleur. 

If you are ok with your current frame you could just invest in a the XT stuff I have – there is also an 11-36 cassette – and new chain. A little over £100 should see you right for your requirements.

There is another thread just started C2W.  The boardman ADV 8.9 would suit you.  48/32 crankset and 11-32 cass.  Hydraulic brakes.

You could for little money improve the gearing to 30T inner chainring
