Currently catching up with the World Cup event over the weekend and started to wonder…

There are specific jerseys for almost everything in cycling except for one thing: The Olympics.

Is it purely due to the 4 year cycle? Or something else?

Anyone know why?

Sammy Sanchez won in 2008 and

Your statement is only true for road racing, not track. Though obviously women didn’t have the Olympics on track or road until relatively recently. 

French, Belgian, Italians, Spanish have always put Worlds over Olympics track or road. Same way we in UK think of Olympic football compared to World Cup or Euros.

Olympics have never been as important to “traditional” cycling nations as the Worlds and were amatuer until 20-odd years ago. Recent RR champs, (Sammy Sanchez, GVA) have adopted gold highlights on their bike and kit.

Suppose it’s the same as one

Suppose it’s the same as one day races eg Paris Roubaix; there’s just a trophy but no special jersey.  Probably best that only the reigning world and national champions (in that event) gets to display their rainbow hoops/national colours at other races, or else it could get out of hand eg reigning TdF champion gets to sport a yellow jersey at other events.  Road cycling was based around national teams years ago so a bit of a ‘legacy’ from that era.
