One Bike - That Bike

When much younger i had one bike, a Hopper Jetstream without gears so it was a Singlie. I road it around town and it was an Urban bike. I went to school and it was a Commuter bike. I bashed it through ditches and hills and it was a Mountain bike. Then down tracks and paths and it was a Gravel bike. I raced my chums and it was a Racing bike. And I rode on the road and it was a Road bike too. Such versatility from one set of totally unmaintained wheels. It rusted to death and my mate's motorbike took over.

Is there one bike out there to rule them all?

Or at least one that would do most of this?

Raleigh Lizard here. Looking back, it had some major shortcomings - the brakes just didn't bit into the shiny chrome rims at all, the SIS gears never indexed properly and it weighed a metric ton.  But I rode to mates' houses that were absolutely miles (3, to be honest) away, hammered it around a disused coal mine, did all-day rides on towpaths and even rode some of this year's Tour de Yorkshire "climbs" on it (not that such a race existed in the late 80s).  I'd love to know what happened to it; it would look great hanging on the garage wall.

Wow! Almost like listening to my self, almost. I didn't go to school on mine, only got my do it all bike on leaving school via hire purchase. My early fifties were a golden bike period of one bike going anywhere, on fixed in my case, like you, we didn't want for the not yet invented off road, gravel and discs, perhaps as well, we wouldn't have been able to afford anyway.
