Giant TCR back brake anomaly

Hi All,

I recently bought a Giant TCR Advanced Pro frameset directly from Giant and had it built up by my LBS. The mechanic noticed that if the bars were turned 50deg to the right the back brake locked on. various lengths of cable/outer were tried with only a minor effect on the problem.

I've gone back to Giant to discuss it with them and they have said that it's not something that they have seen before. I went to a Giant store and in the presence of one of the staff I turned the bars to the right on one of the display models and lo and behold the same thing happened... it appears that turning the bars right pulls the brake cable.

The bike is going to Giant on Friday for an exam and i'm almost of the view that I should be asking for my money back as this is neither normal nor safe.

Has anyone had a similar experience with their TCR? If yes what was the outcome?

Thanks.

Sounds like a build fault to me. Most likely rigged with the cable outer too short.

I have a TCR Advanced 1 (2017) and tried this out. I was surprised to find out that I see the same thing - the rear brake begins to apply itself as I turn the handlebars to the right, beyond about 50 degrees. That would explain why I keep hearing a tiny bit of brake rub as I make the tight right hand corner out of my road!

Thanks for all the comments.

Regarding housing length... several different lengths were tried, and as I mentioned in the original post the same issue is apparent on the display model in the Giant store.

@J886atv - what size is your frame? Mine is a Medium, as was the display model. I wonder if it's a size specific problem.

It's into Giant tomorrow so we'll see what comes of that.

2017 TCR Advanced Pro 2 - no such issues for me

Seriously though, it’s 100% a set up issue. The housing from the lever to the frame is wrong, either too short or not inserted into the brake lever properly, or possibly routed along the bar incorrectly. Euro brake layout would actually help as the cable runs are much preferable that the bizarre way brakes are installed in the U.K.

If you set the brakes up Euro style then you’d have to turn the bars left to brake

Automatic braking eh?  One day all bikes will be like this.

The brake housing must be too short.

Just checked mine and there is no movement int he back brake moving the handle bars as far round both ways as they go.

The rear cable housing does stick out in quite a big loop but nothing major.
