Hi,

I currently ride a 2009 Giant TCR 0 Alliance 2009. It’s an old bike that has seen a lot and I really enjoy it. Component are mostly 105 with a small mix of ultregra. Wheels are DuraAce C24.

I’m looking for a new bike and I saw a used Argon 18 Gallium Pro 2017. Group is DuraAce Di2 and wheel are Vision Metron 40 carbon. It’s used and as only 2000km. It’s looking good, but it’s still 5.7k and I need a new power meter on top of that (currently I own a 4iii left side).

I’m really hesitant, will it really make a big difference? I know that the motor is mostly the “rider” himself, but I’m at a crossroad, my bike is old and tend to be a little clunky. I could change the component or just go ahead and change the whole thing.

Hi sorry guys, the price is in canadian dollar, so @5.7k cad (so around £3.3k) it’s more than 40% off. I would say the bike cost more than 10k for sure.

I’m still hesitant. It’s still a lot of money. I thought also of changing my current component set (shimano 105 5600) to an ultegra di2, since my old groupset is starting to freak me out (even after a couple of adjustment at my bike shop) it as a mind of it’s own. I wonder, are groupset compatible with any road bike frame?

There is a lot to be said for

There is a lot to be said for a year old bike, if the deal is right. There is also a lot to be said for riding a bike bought, and set up from new, for you. Personally, for a 2000 mile bike I would want at least 30% off list. Especially as there are some nicely specced new galliums in dealers with 15% off list.  At £5.7k, I would buy new, and sleep happily with known history and full warranty.

£5700 for a second hand 2017 bike sounds quite steep though.

For what its worth, I rode a top-of-the range fully specced up Wilier Zero7 on a demo ride.  It was not night-and-day different to my £1500 Wilier.  The best way to describe it is more reactive.  I achieved a similar feel by buying a nice set of wheels.  Don’t expect a massive difference- its still a bike and you still have to pedal hard for the best results!

Probably best to be safe and get 2 new bikes – one with rim brakes and one with discs.

Of course you need a new bike, stupid boy pike!
Will it make you go faster, maybe a bit (it’ll be lighter for sure and the 40mm wheels will keep you flowing easier at higher speeds)… but enough of that nonsense, of course you need a new bike!
