I was in Halfords in Bangor today and they had the Wiggins Rouen in 540 and 650 sizes. Lovely looking bikes, the paint looks nicer in the flesh than on the internet. I'd be more than happy to buy one for my kids, they're far better than what we had when I was young.
Its pretty high geared for a kids bike. 40x28 at the low end? Not every kid would get up a hill on that.
+1 for the Wiggins. My daughter loves hers, now called Barry... Don't really notice the fork shape tbh, not that pronounced in the flesh/metal. She's still not out the small ring up front, but is getting up hills that would have had her jumping off to push on the old Merida. Admittedly a very different bike tho'.
Comes with 23's but would definitely take 25's, maybe even a conservative 28 tyre. One day soon I will chuck on a 28 gatorskin and report back.
7 speed may mean 130 OLN on the rear wheel, would would prevent you upgrading to 8 speed or higher. And the gear shifter is beside the stem - not ideal, except when on the tops, but part of the reason for the price.
Have you considered the Wiggins Rouen? Also 650c but 9.3 kg with 8 speed double Shimano Claris gears (46/34) and currently £264 at Halfords. You'd get 10% off that with a BC membership card.
130 is still the standard up to 11s unless you have disc brakes, very old 7s were 126mm. Agree not a great spec by adult standards but easy for kids to use.
Oops, yes!
Thanks for the correction. I was thinking of my old 7 speed MTB, and that the OLN went out to 135mm with 8 speed.
Agree, that's a better spec for the price, would just need the crosstops. Can't say I like the look of those reverse-bend forks though.
